Members Rada Posted December 7, 2006 Members Posted December 7, 2006 And it's only costing me $270 It was a Norman B18 Cedar Burgandy....While, I love Godin acoustics, I was slowly slipping away and moving towards my Gibsons and Guilds ie. the guitars that I LOVE and dream of having Well, I went into my local shop today, and picked it up while waiting on the owner to finish up with a customer....it has a hideous finish, but I had never seen the B18 with a Cedar top...I couldn't believe how great the neck felt, the width was perfect...and then I started playing, and I don't think I've ever played a Norman that played so clear...the action was perfect...it was very articulate when I was doing some fingerstyle stuff, and was loud and boomy yet balanced when I did the more aggressive Ray Lamontagne strumming...and without fret buzz....basically all the things I look for in a guitar! And the thing is, it wasn't just good for a Norman, it wasn't just good for a Godin....it was just amazing....even some of the people in the shop stopped, listened to me and complimented the sound of the guitar. When I was talking to the owner has said Norman is doing to some great work this year and he agreed that was one of nicest sounded he's ever heard....I can't wait to but some electronics in her! Well, before I left I put her on lay away
Members viguitar Posted December 7, 2006 Members Posted December 7, 2006 Just remember to be good to her, or the next thing you know she will be in bed with another man.

Members Stackabones Posted December 7, 2006 Members Posted December 7, 2006 Wow, that's sounds really cool! When you get it, will you post some pix and clips? Norman, huh? Gonna do some searching now ...
Members Rada Posted December 7, 2006 Author Members Posted December 7, 2006 Pics for sure....even though I think the guitar is hideous! Clips, on the other hand, will be more difficult since I don't have recording equipment I've owned a few normans, but these two were my favorite the B20 and the ST68 (which DonK owns now)....I'm definitely looking forward to getting one back in my collection

Members Harmonycat Posted December 7, 2006 Members Posted December 7, 2006 I was just blown away by the B-18 that I played. I was just not expecting it to be as good as it was. I played a B-20, B-50, ST-40 as well. They were all nice guitars... the ST-40 was very good. I could not believe that B-18 though. I also got to finally play the much ballyhooed ST-68 and.....It was everything anyone who ever raved about it said. It was so amazingly good....it's trebles just chimed in Bell-Like fashion. The mids were very pronounced and distinct. The bass was deep and clean. Harmonics and overtones were like a chorus of angels singing. I have only ever played Larrivees or Martins that impressed me that much. WOW.....I would love to trip over a mint condition version of it from a Starving Musician:thu: I have an S&P Cedar/Hog and the St-40 was similar. But the ST-68 and B-18 were just wonderful and just shone as huge value guitars!

What norman do you have? I think this acoustic is going to finally convince me to get some recording equipment Any suggestions?

My last couple of posts before I pass out: I've got a B20, which according to Norman's own literature is "aimed toward recording". I've got to agree with them. Just point a mic at the neck joint and you don't have to do much else (EQ- or compression-wise). I used to have a B50, which sounded a tad "thinner" in recording. String choice makes a "tremendous" difference. I've finally settled on Martin SP's (bronze). Also had a Seagull M6.
Members Cripes Posted December 7, 2006 Members Posted December 7, 2006 I played (my brother's) B20-12 which was a cherry lam and it was a very nice looking guitar. But, it was so jangly I didn't have much use for it. I tried recording it but, no matter what I did when mixing, it was just too dominant. I also thought the neck a bit on the stocky side, by contrast to Taylors and Guilds, which was a shame because if they can do it... I have not played their other guitars but will keep your advice in mind. Do any of the big chains carry Norman? The little shops around me only carry the Seagulls.

Norman is the least carried of the Godin line
Members Hudman Posted December 7, 2006 Members Posted December 7, 2006 Welcome back. Sounds like you found a keeper. You can make some low budget recordings with a cheap mic, a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter and your PC's stock sound card. All you need after that is a recording program. You can download Audacity for free.

I'm going to be getting a MacBook for my birthday in June....I'll wait until then
Members Roy Posted December 7, 2006 Members Posted December 7, 2006 Well, I went into my local shop today... So who sells these things? I'm in L.A.
Members Roy Posted December 7, 2006 Members Posted December 7, 2006 I checked their website and they don't list any dealers in Oxnard so I'm thinking their list isn't quite complete.

They have a fair number of dealers in the UK.
Members Etienne Rambert Posted December 8, 2006 Members Posted December 8, 2006 Or at least, he's God's composer. Hey stackabones, I love your avatar. I've spent many an hour playing that magnificent album. Carinhoso, is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever writte n or recorded, AFAIC. Did you know Jobim did 200 takes to get it right?
