Members keyshore Posted January 5, 2007 Members Posted January 5, 2007 Hi,Happy New Year to all, may 2007 be good for Acoustic Guitar players all over the globe. I am a live solo pro musician, as a replacement for my current Ovation Custom Legend I am proposing to purchase 2 guitars, an OM shape with cedar top and Rosewood back and sides to handle my fingerstyle stuff and i already have a Takamine EF400SC 12 string which is spruce top/rosewood back for my heavy strumming stuff. I am purchasing the Pendulum SPS preamp. As i want another guitar to handle both fingerstyle/soft strumming stuff I have selected the Taylor GS series with Cedar top/ mahogany back, this way I will have 3 different shapes and wood types, as i will be having the Pendulum, I was thinking of fitting a LR baggs LB6 passive pick up for the Taylor, I have decided against the Taylor ES as I will be tweaking the Pendulum to get sound on the PA also dont want to mess with preamps and batteries on the guitar itself. Please comment on my selections? Do you think there is a better option for a passive pickup other than the LB6? Also is there another option for the Taylor? I want a guitar with cedartop/mahogany back. Regards, Keyshore
Members Cldplytkmn Posted January 5, 2007 Members Posted January 5, 2007 i like the K&K pure western mini... if you want an undersaddle, i'd probably not go with the LB6... its just not baggs' most current technology... their Element gets high marks.
Members sdelsolray Posted January 5, 2007 Members Posted January 5, 2007 A Pendulum SPS-1 is the finest acoustic guitar preamp/eq available. It's designed for a dual source setup, or a single source with vocal. It might be overkill for a single source pickup for solo guitar, as one channel of the unit would not be used, and you'd miss out on using the stereo mix bus. I'd suggest looking into a dual source setup, either a pickup/pickup or pickup/internal mic for each guitar. Use the same config for each guitar, or at least the same type of pickups. That way you only need to get one preamp module with the SPS-1, either a pickup/pickup or pickup/internal mic (for dual source). Consider UST/SBT SBT/Mag UST/Mag SBT/mic UST/mic Mag/mic Only use passive pickups with the SPS-1, so stay away from any active electronics from other makers. They will dumb down your sound.
Members keyshore Posted January 5, 2007 Author Members Posted January 5, 2007 I would be using a total of 3 guitars for different songs and acoustic flavours, the SPS would in fact run the Taylor GS and an OM both fitted with passive LR Baggs LB6 so both chanels are used, while the Takamine EF400SC would be hooked up directly to the mixer through a DI box and I will be using it's on board CT4B preamp, this way i can simply pick up whatever guitar i require for a particular song without having to interchange cables etc. during a performance. What I would like to know is that is there a better replacement for the LB6? I need some info on current passive pickups available with better technology. Regards, Keyshore
Members sdelsolray Posted January 5, 2007 Members Posted January 5, 2007 It sounds like you want to use a UST single source. You may wish to reconsider that. While there are many adherents for single source USTs, they usually prefer that solution because of ease of use, feedback resistance and the UST's abiility to cut through in a band setting. Rarely do folks use USTs solely because of the way they sound. You might want to check out the numerous pickup samples at the following site:http://www.dougyoungguitar.com/pickuptest.htm
