Members DeepEnd Posted January 6, 2007 Members Posted January 6, 2007 I thought of this in relation to a 7-string guitar that Freeman Keller mentioned in another thread: If you could play a custom 7-string guitar, what would the extra string be and why? In my case, I'd double up on the high E because I tend to mute it when I play a B or Bb. The two strings could be tuned in unison or it would also be cool if the upper (closer to the B) string in the pair were tuned an octave low, as in: E A D G B Ee Although that arrangement probably wouldn't work for flatpicking, it would work well for fingerpicking.
Members Stackabones Posted January 6, 2007 Members Posted January 6, 2007 I don't know if I'd need to design it, maybe cut a different nut, but I'm intrigued by the 7-string with a high A, a la Lenny Breau. E A D G B e a
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted January 6, 2007 Members Posted January 6, 2007 I'd just tune it jazz-style (A E A D G B E)...that seems like a handy tuning to me. Lenny Breau's tuning is kinda intriguing, too, but I'm not sure where you could find a string you could tune to high A...seems like I read that for his gut-string, he used fishing line! A Russian immigrant I know tunes his 7-string DGDGBDG, as a rule...I think he told me that that's pretty much the standard Russian tuning for their 7-string gut-string guitars.
Members Cripes Posted January 7, 2007 Members Posted January 7, 2007 Tough call. I was thinking as using it as a low E octave - same course. Depends where your ear hears it best.
Members nylon rock Posted January 7, 2007 Members Posted January 7, 2007 Martin offers a 7 string. It is a signature Roger McGuinn. Has one sting like one of the doubles from a twelve string. I like six strings just fine. I have enough trouble with six strings to even begin to complicate things even further with seven.

Or just buy a set of requinto strings!
Members simplygoodmusic Posted January 7, 2007 Members Posted January 7, 2007 Ibanez, and if I am not mistaken dean, use to offer a seven string with a low B. Both have been discontinued though.

The requinto strings I've seen were the same guage as regular (nylon) guitar strings...the requintos the mariachis play is just basically tuned like a guitar capoed at the 5th fret, due to it's shorter neck/scale. Yeah, the Ibanez looks like a pretty decent one!

The only set I've seen was (I think, anyway...it was a few months ago) LaBella. The article I read about Breau using fishing line for his high A was either in Guitar Player or Frets and it was at least a few years prior to his mysterious death in '84...possibly late 70s...memory's not what it once was!
