Members flip333 Posted December 27, 2006 Members Posted December 27, 2006 I'm in Iowa. Has anyone seen a 000-15S in the midwest? The music stores have to special order it and are not receptive to "returns" if I don't like it. I want to play my 000-15S before I buy it. I want my next acoustic guitar to call me like a siren. I wouldn't order a mail order bride, would you? Although at least with Musician's Friend, it is a no hassle return if it does not "grab" me. Hmmmmm... I could go to Omaha, Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Louis, Moline, or Peoria. Don't think I could drive to Pennsylvannia.....

Your choice of weapon and of purchasing methodology imparts an impression of wisdom on your part.
Members Fireproof Posted December 27, 2006 Members Posted December 27, 2006 Good line of thinking. But if you know of a model that you like, don't overlook Musician's Friend if you can't find one within driving distance. MF ships nice specimens double-boxed and the return process is in fact painless!! Hope you find the one that speaks to you! It's a beautiful thing!
Members flip333 Posted December 27, 2006 Author Members Posted December 27, 2006 Thanks for the list Knockwood, I'll make some calls first. I gotta at least try to play my baby first.... thanks guys!
Members kwakatak Posted December 27, 2006 Members Posted December 27, 2006 Good call on wanting to try one out before purchasing. Martin is pretty vague with their component descriptions. For example, I'd like to see what kind of wood is actually used instead of rolling the dice on "select hardwood" or "mahogany OR sapele". Some things are not interchangable. The only advice I could think of would be to find your closest Martin dealer, strike up an amicable relationship with him and drop in or call from time to see what he has in stock. That's what I'm in the process of doing right now, even though I'm not in the market for a new guitar anytime soon. I just enjoy walking in, chit-chatting for a bit and sampling what he has in the back room from time to time.
Members DonK Posted December 28, 2006 Members Posted December 28, 2006 I'd consider Elderly Instruments: http://elderly.com/new_instruments/items/00015S.htm They do a complete set-up before shipping and are very helpful and willing to answer questions about specific guitars for sale at their site. If you can't get to their store, I'd be willing to order from them and take a chance. You've basically got a 5-day approval period with them. Buffalo Brothers is another good place when you can find one in stock. Same deal: setup before they sell, approval period, and they'll give you 100% on a trade-up within a certain period (I think it's six months). Both of these are first class dealers.
Members Fireproof Posted December 28, 2006 Members Posted December 28, 2006 Yeah, for Martin's purchased online, my top recommendations are Elderly (see above) or Maury's Music. You can find Maury at www.maurysmusic.com and can trust him to take care of you. I had a very positive experience purchasing my D16 and I know others have as well.

If that is the guitar you really think you want, and can't find one in stock within a reasonable driving distance, I would have no hesitation going this way, from everything I have read here for the past year and a half that I have been around.
Members Siwash Posted December 29, 2006 Members Posted December 29, 2006 No, No. Go to Galesburg, IL; there's a pretty neat music store right downtown on Main Street that has a ton of Martins, good stuff, in fact, I picked up a D-15 there to look at.
Members Siwash Posted December 29, 2006 Members Posted December 29, 2006 I've been through Peoria, lately, too, and there are a coupl eof D-16s at the Guitar Center out by Northwoods Mall. . . not sounding too good, by the way, and no D-15s. But the Galesburg place is really neat and you'd like it. (disclaimer: I have no connection to it, just dropped in there; hadn't been to Galesburg in years and was nicely surprised at the downtown).
Members rjoxyz Posted December 29, 2006 Members Posted December 29, 2006 I bought my 000-15S (and an HD-28) at Elderly and could not be happier. They are Martin "specialists" and I believe, sell more Martins than any other retailer. 60 years in the business and a stellar reputation. I have the advantage of being close enough to go to the store. I was just there 2 days ago and I did not see any 000-15S models in stock, but they can order for you. I have heard nothing but good things about Maury's as well as My Favorite Guitars (in Florida), from the fanatical posters over at the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum. I don't think you can go wrong at any of these places. Good luck. Don't worry, the 000-15S will "grab you", especially if you do a lot of fingerpicking.
Members Buck05 Posted December 29, 2006 Members Posted December 29, 2006 I had the same problem. I was intrigued by the 000-15s because I like the 000 body size and it is an all solid wood guitar. But where I live, none of the guitar stores stock them. So I just cast fate to the wind and ordered one from First Quality Music Supply. I figured, worst case scenario, I have to return it. But it wasn't necessary because the guitar is fantastic! Great for fingerpicking and quite attractive as well. As to where to order it, don't know what to tell you. I was happy with FQMS. Others on this thread recommended Elderly or Maurys. But I do recommend the guitar:thu:

Members flip333 Posted January 8, 2007 Author Members Posted January 8, 2007 Great info, thanks. I will drive around a bit first. A road trip to Galesburg and Peoria sounds fun. The S had the wider spacing that felt good when I played it. If a good deal came up on a 000-15, I would consider that I think. I like the stores that would let me return the guitar if it was not what I wanted. It would probably be fine though.
Members Dan Hall Posted January 8, 2007 Members Posted January 8, 2007 Wait a minute. Is the "S" the twelve fret job or the spruce top/no binding/no bling/this is how we make a 000-18 cheaper guitar?
Members Treborklow Posted January 8, 2007 Members Posted January 8, 2007 I had a similar situation looking for a 00-15. I saw many 000's and I like them, but I wanted to see a 00 before committing to either. No one stocked the 00 near me. Finally I contacted Daves Guitars in Wisc., as I noticed they came to Chicago for the guitar shows. They featured one on their site, so I asked them to bring one with them to the next show and they did. They even marked it almost a hundred bucks cheaper than anyone else. I played it and then I bought it. Nice little guitar at a great price.

Aw shux, those 15 series Martins are darn good guitars and I'm glad they're making them.

I'm fix'n to go play one if I ever get out'a here. I think I've said a whole bunch of times that I recently played a Morgan all hog and had my whole wide mind changed about all hog guitars.

Members Siwash Posted January 9, 2007 Members Posted January 9, 2007 Yeah, Flip, that store in Galesburg is right across Main St. from the Seminary St. antique mall: three stories of antiques; we stopped in there as a break on our trip, I walked over to check out the music store. I hadn't been to the burg in seven or eight years (the downtown's looking tons better), and this store was there. I DO think a 000 was there along with a dreadnought. A lot of Taylor stuff too, but if you want that mahogany woody sound, the Martin 15s have it in droves.
Members Queequeg Posted January 9, 2007 Members Posted January 9, 2007 my 000-15s has more miles on it than any other guitar in this house, and its not the oldest. I buffed out the satin finish last summer and I just put a (Bob Colosi) bone saddle in it over the holidays. I'm playing it right now. Elderly; +1 or whatever the count is up to now in this thread. no worries on a mail order, and if you're up for a road trip to Lansing, it's a great store to kill an afternoon in any time. in-store clinics/workshops, big inventory, knowledgeable staff.
