Members driches Posted January 24, 2007 Members Posted January 24, 2007 I just bought a Martin HD28v. It's awesome. At the store I asked about getting a pickup installed (they'll give me a deal on that since i bought the guitar there). I asked about K&K Pure Western Mini as I've heard nothing but good things here. They didn't have it, and said that the Fishman pickup was crap, and I should go for the LR Baggs pickup. However, looking back here and on thegearpage, I see most people really seem to prefer the K&K, and that the Baggs has some feedback issues. Also, I'd rather not have a battery installed if i don't need to. What do you think? SHould I buy the PWM elsewhere and have them install it? Is the Baggs worth it? Will there be feedback with the Baggs? What exactly do I lose with the K&K?
Members Whalebot Posted January 24, 2007 Members Posted January 24, 2007 K&K, you lose nothing. You really gain a purer more 'acoustic' tone.
Members AugTPD Posted January 24, 2007 Members Posted January 24, 2007 which baggs pickup (ribbon, element, m1?) The ribbon and the element are about as feedback prone as any undersaddle. The M1 is typically really good about feedback prevention. without a battery I would suggest either the K&K or m1 passive with a Baggs PADI.
Members DenverDave Posted January 24, 2007 Members Posted January 24, 2007 K&K pickups are seriously good! That is what I use - incredibly natural sounding!
Members Freeman Keller Posted January 24, 2007 Members Posted January 24, 2007 I don't do pickups, but the guy who has worked on my martins (Bryan Kimsey, one of the best) swears by the K&K. Here is what he says on his site "I sell K&K pickups. I signed up for K&K after installing a Mini-Western in a customer's guitar. Running thru an LR Baggs ParaAcoustic DI into my Peavey Ecoustic 110 amp gave me a very pleasant acoustic sound- the best I've heard yet from a simple system. I keep the Mini-Western pickups and Pure Preamps in stock, but can get anything- visit the K&K site for more information on their products Contact me for more information. "
Members recordingtrack1 Posted January 24, 2007 Members Posted January 24, 2007 The only one that I have experience with is the Baggs M1. I love them and really am very impressed with the sound quality. One of my buddies owns two Epiphone Masterbilts and both have the Baggs systems. They sound almost as good as the ES in my Taylor. RT:)

Members Jake7 Posted January 25, 2007 Members Posted January 25, 2007 I have the baggs ribbon transducer in my yamaha coupled with the yamaha preamp and inernal gooseneck mic......but run with the mic dialled out its not a bad sounding pickup.....no more feedback prone than say a fishamn matrix, of which I have a couple. It is a little "thumpy" on the transient attack, and I played a K+K equipped gibson that didn't have that tendency at all....it sounded great.
