Members guitar-fish Posted January 22, 2007 Members Posted January 22, 2007 With the absence of Search I figured I'd just ask. I know about three songs that are done on 12-string, most notably, Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". I love the sound of a 12, I stopped by the local store tonight and played a Takamine jumbo elec/acoustic 12 that blew me away. I think it was $700. My limit will probably be low-end, or used, like $300. My concern is I don't know if I'll play it that much. What do you guys play, how often do you use it, etc?
Members Freeman Keller Posted January 22, 2007 Members Posted January 22, 2007 Who plays 12 string? - me What do I play on it? Almost everything I play on a six What do others play on a 12 string? The first thread is 6 pages of suggestions http://p082.ezboard.com/ftheunofficialmartinguitarforumfrm150 Could I do without one? Hell no, I own two. Would I buy a low end or used one? Very carefully] Twelve string guitars have been called the Grand Pianos of the guitar world. Here are mine
Members Dru Edwards Posted January 22, 2007 Members Posted January 22, 2007 I have a Yamaha that I bought back in 1989. I haven't played it in a while but I still love it.
Members guitar-fish Posted January 23, 2007 Author Members Posted January 23, 2007 Mr. Keller, though I can't see the logo, the one on the right appears to be a Martin, which means....

The OM12's are kinda rare...
Members Jessz1 Posted January 23, 2007 Members Posted January 23, 2007 Love the 12. I am looking to upgrade myself. My Alvarez is great for the money. But I just can't be satisfied. I would try and save a little more cash say 500 or so and buy an AD60-12 Nice 12 for the cash.
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted January 23, 2007 Members Posted January 23, 2007 I have 3 (Taylor 355 for standard tuning, 2 Guild F-212XLs for Open G and Open D/DADGAD tunings) and I use my 12-string guitars on about half the songs I do at any of my gigs...they're indispensible to my music. Be very, very cautious about a cheaper 12-string...they rarely last very long! I'd suggest you save a little longer and buy a used Guild F or D-212...I see these for around $500 a lot...
Members WaveRay Posted January 23, 2007 Members Posted January 23, 2007 Just found out my Taylor 455ce is a dealer custom. Rosewood w/ES. 2003 400 series guitars did not come with ES. They made some IER/ES 455 ce's that year but they were labeled as such (455rce). Mine is labeled as a regular 455ce, for what that may matter.Anyhoo, Like FK says, anything you play on a sixer you can play on a 12. Although some songs translate better than others.I don't use mine alot lately due to my concentration on my 28V fingering, but I always love it when it comes out. Ray
Members brahmz118 Posted January 23, 2007 Members Posted January 23, 2007 Finally decided I wanted an indestuctible 12-string, so I got a carbon fiber Emerald. Stainless steel frets, Sperzel locking tuners, tusq nut, saddle, and bridge pins. Currently set up with medium Elixir Nanos, tuned down to C#.

Members Mark_E_Wallace Posted January 23, 2007 Members Posted January 23, 2007 With the absence of Search I figured I'd just ask. You mean, aside from the "Search" function residing in the toolbar? It's back. Has been for a few days now. - Mark

Members Quake17 Posted January 23, 2007 Members Posted January 23, 2007 I agree with FK, a 12'er is a very good thing to have in the ol' quiver. Here is my sunburst '69 D12-35: http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/quake17/IMG_0046.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/quake17/IMG_0047.jpg

Members Michael Martin Posted January 23, 2007 Members Posted January 23, 2007 Alas, I have a beautiful 12 (Tak F395) that gathers dust (well, not really--it's in a case.) I don't ever play it. I should, but I don't. It may as well be a bass clarinet. When I get a round tuit, I'll sell it to free up cash for something I lust for.
Members brahmz118 Posted January 23, 2007 Members Posted January 23, 2007 Holy crap. Never seen one like that. How's she sound? Very clear, loud and precise. The carbon fiber sound is not for everyone -- it doesn't have the warmth of wood, particularly in the bass register. This guitar seems to favor the mid and high range, so the octave strings tend to ring louder than their bass counterparts during fingerpicking. This opens some doors, technique-wise. I don't see myself developing the skill to pluck individual strings at will, but I can definitely use my thumb to play melody notes that wouldn't normally be in reach or convenient. The harmonics are unbelievable. I'm more motivated than ever to learn as many harmonic note locations as possible because of their amazing crystal clear sound on this guitar. It also sounds great with a slide, which I can't really say about many other 12's I've played. The best part of course is that I can play it anytime, anywhere, without worrying about how much longer it has to live.

Members guitar-fish Posted January 24, 2007 Author Members Posted January 24, 2007 Just thought I'd post this 12 stringer I saw on eBay. Wow, check this thing out, it's gorgeous.Taylor custom walnut 12 string
Members daklander Posted January 24, 2007 Members Posted January 24, 2007 I have an old dumpster 12 stringer. It's a Venture Bruno but has a tailpiece on it. Something, at one time or another, went wrong with the bridge and it got wacked so someone installed another piece of wood to cover and movable bridge and tailpiece. Sounds, well, different. I have a recording around somewhere.

Unfortunately, same with my Sakura S-12-9 that I bought at the end of my junior year in college, back in May of '74. It looks pretty much like Freeman's D12-28, same color top, etc. except it has black bridge pins. I'm supposed to play along with our church choir this Sunday and I was thinking this particular song would sound great on a 12, so I might get it out and tune it.

Taylor custom walnut 12 string VERY nice (other than being flawed w/ an Expression System)...that's some SERIOUSLY beautiful wood!!! Someday (when the last of the kiddos are out on their own and I can buy a few new expensive toys), I plan to order a W65c and add my own choice of P/U.
Members pgcorky Posted January 24, 2007 Members Posted January 24, 2007 I had similar concerns about a 12 string. I love the sound, but couldn't see spending a fortune on something I wouldn't play frequently. But didn't want to go so cheap on the guitar as to get something frustrating/unplayable. I ended up with a Walden D552. Check the reviews - nice way to get into a 12 and see if think it's worth having - without breaking the bank.http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Acoustic+Guitar/product/Walden/D552+12-String+Acoustic/10/1
Members SpinalTap Posted January 24, 2007 Members Posted January 24, 2007 The name "Ovation" may elicit some sneers, but so be it: I love the heck outta my Standard Balladeer 12. Sounds great plugged or unplugged, and plays like a dream. Played it 20% of the time, versus 80% on sixes, then bought my first electric since high school. Since then, the 12er gets played even less. Still, we'll never part!
