Members KATMAN Posted January 28, 2007 Members Posted January 28, 2007 I use to put Elixers on my Epiphone PR-350CE,but now I only use D'Addarios on all my guitars.I like the feel of non coated strings myself, and I like the deeper tone as well. I tried to put Elixers on my Takamine when I first bought it and didn't care for the sound. I just curious to see how many prefer coated strings over uncoated ones.

Been using Poly's since they first came out, but just bought a set of D'Adarrio EXPs to try out next time I change out Guild #1 (my favorite JF-4)'s strings.
Members babablowfish Posted January 28, 2007 Members Posted January 28, 2007 Remember Invasion of the Body Snatchers where the Pod People all looked and talked exactly like the real people, and yet there was something creepy and unsettling and ultimatelyy deadly about them? Members EastCoastPlayah Posted January 28, 2007 Members Posted January 28, 2007 I statred with non coated 15 years ago, but I put ployweb Elixirs on all my guitars now. I tried other coated strings, including Wyres (supposedly the original) but I just don't care for them.
Members Hudman Posted January 28, 2007 Members Posted January 28, 2007 Funny, I was just trying to figure out how Baba got the radio transmitter into my brain... Certain AG forum members have a distinct influence on their peers. Here's a few examples off the top of my head: Knockwood - He inspires others to share personal tales of guitar tragedy. It is through his influence that we feel comfortable sharing tragic tales about guitar players being eaten alive on the subway and or attacked by badgers at their front door after a FedEx delivery. Kwakatak - He inspires us to try to record a song so heart-felt that it makes a tough guy like Jasmine Tea cry like a girl. Freeman Keller - He makes guitar building look easy. I believe he will cause many of us to go broke at Stew Mac and possibly have a nervous breakdown attempting to assemble an acoustic guitar kit. Cripes (Sweb) - His generousity makes us want to send our less used guitar gear to fellow forum members. He is like the secret Santa. The world would be a better place if we were all like Cripes-Sweb. Queequeg - He is a role model for single guys everywhere. He's had the same lady friend for several years. She still likes him and buys him guitar gear from time to time. That's living fellas. Whalebot - He is better than the HC Review web page. Why? He's owned almost every guitar you could ever want for at least 24 hours each. I'm going to blame him for being a bad influence on me. Why? I do the same thing and it's the new American way to blame others. I can keep going, and name more forum members but I think you get the idea.... Thanks fellas! :D
Members Hudman Posted January 28, 2007 Members Posted January 28, 2007 I made that big post and I forgot to answer the actual question in this thread..... Overall, I prefer Martin SP PB's (.012 - .054) over all of the strings I tried recently. I think I'm going to pick up a set of the Fingerstyle Martin SP PB's for my next set of strings on my OM-03. The D'Addario EXP PB's and the Elixir Nano PB's are good if you want to use a coated string. I hate the feel of the Elixir Pollywebs. I am curious to try some Cleartones and some coated Martin SP PB's. I may try a set of each real soon.
Members riffmeister Posted January 28, 2007 Members Posted January 28, 2007 tried coated & non-coated on my Collings Adi/mahogany guitars. these guitars are on the bright side, so I like the darker sound of the coated strings on them (medium Elixir polywebs on the dread, light Elixir nanoweb wound strings and medium D'Addario unwound strings on the OM). .
Members guitarist21 Posted January 28, 2007 Members Posted January 28, 2007 Kwakatak - He inspires us to try to record a song so heart-felt that it makes a tough guy like Jasmine Tea cry like a girl. Then JT inspires us to remember what the original thread was about and say, "Elixirs suck." Ellen

Members recordingtrack1 Posted January 28, 2007 Members Posted January 28, 2007 There's something weirdly paranoic about this thread. Elixirs are great. They sound great and they are cheap. I'm still using the same set of nano mediums on my Jumbo that I put on before Christmas. They still look, feel and sound brand new. I played it today for my Church during worship services. Afterwards 4 or 5 members came up to me telling me how good the guitar sounded today. (Note, that they said the guitar sounded good, not me.) Rt1
Members min7b5 Posted January 28, 2007 Members Posted January 28, 2007 Uncoated strings are superior... for about three hours:D I guess everyone has different skin chemistry... to me, Elixir PB
Members knockwood Posted January 28, 2007 Members Posted January 28, 2007 "Elixirs suck." Long live the E.S.C.
Members JasmineTea Posted January 28, 2007 Members Posted January 28, 2007 Elixirs are a joke. They sound funny too. It's like having a guitar sampler, sounds exactly the plastic-y same no matter what. Heck, why spend money on a nice sounding guitar if it's gonna be limited to...that Elixir sound?
Members knockwood Posted January 29, 2007 Members Posted January 29, 2007 This will explain everything:
Members AndrewGG Posted January 29, 2007 Members Posted January 29, 2007 I use Elixir Nanos on all my guitars; it's a chemistry thing mostly but they sound good to me too. A set will last me a couple of months; an uncoated set might last a couple of days.Maybe there are strings which sound better but if it's just going to be for a couple of days I see little point in using them. ------------------ Gibson SJ 200Gibson J 185 KoaGibson Advanced Jumbo (coming this week!)Gibson ES 335Gibson Les Paul CustomCapek F4 mandolin
Members Cldplytkmn Posted January 29, 2007 Members Posted January 29, 2007 on a good day, my thoughts on coated strings are "everybody has different wiring on their internal mics" on a bad day, my thoughts on coated strings are "WTF are they hearing??" the correct answer is the good day one... or the bad day one, i can't decide.
Members sdelsolray Posted January 29, 2007 Members Posted January 29, 2007 Elixirs are a joke. Heck, why spend money on a nice sounding guitar if it's gonna be limited to...that Elixir sound? I guess a lot of it has to do with your playing style(s), right hand techniques, the guitar(s) involved, music style(s), body chemistry, and, of course, personal preference. I like Elixirs, particularly the new PB Nanos, use them more than any other brand. Don't care much for D'Addario non-coated. Like McDonalds hamburgers.
Members Dr. Porkchop Posted January 29, 2007 Members Posted January 29, 2007 I hate non coated strings, because with my skin they get cruddy and hard to play really fast. Not an issue with coated strings, plus they seem to last longer.
Members knockwood Posted January 29, 2007 Members Posted January 29, 2007 Don't care much for D'Addario non-coated. Like McDonalds hamburgers. At least D'Addario takes the wrapper off...

I despise weekly or bi-weekly string changes, and my poly elixirs will last two months with regular playing. They stay looking great, and thier sound remains consistant. I love them! I am interested in the Cleartones, though. Anybody try them yet? How do they compare to Elixirs?
