Members Dan Hall Posted February 6, 2007 Members Posted February 6, 2007 I played a really thrashed 1952 Gibson LG-2 today. Crack in the Back, nice wide narrow wide top, refret but I ain't sure if the necks been reset. Nice sounding guitar for a Gibson. (Allright, no fighting) It sounded very nice and played pretty good too. I think the dealer put $1000 on it more or less as a joke or a starting point. The back crack would need re-repair and the overall condition kinda keeps it out of the "Collector" bracket. Still, I was very pleasantly surprised. It's amazing how a guitar will open up after half a century. Much more "open" and balanced than the B-25s that I've played. Similar size.
Members Cldplytkmn Posted February 6, 2007 Members Posted February 6, 2007 the GC here has a B25 that they've had for over a year and a half... still marked $800... never gonna get it. The sound is decent enough, and its in pretty good shape, but the neck on that thing is like a pencil. and for $800 fuggedaboutit. i've never played any of the LGs
Members guitarcapo Posted February 6, 2007 Members Posted February 6, 2007 Yea there's a lot of overpriced stuff on the market. The whole concept of "vintage guitars" came about at a time when it was very difficult and labor intensive to build a guitar. But these days, with the advent of CNC manufacturing, it's arguable whether the quality of old instruments is any better than modern ones. That leaves "collectors" to prop up the vintage market. But they usually gravitate toward historically significant instruments. A friend of mine had a beat up Gretsch 1960's "Princess" Corvette model guitar his mother had left him in her will. He was a drummer and didn't know anything about the guitar. I searched Ebay and based on sales I told him that it was probably worth about 900 bucks. He went to Guitar Center and they paid him that in cash for it. Anyway it's been sitting there for two years now with a 1,500.00 price tag on it...waiting for some chick who's into vintage guitars and has 1,500 dollars to spend, I guess.
