Members jsgates Posted February 8, 2007 Members Posted February 8, 2007 I need some help comparing the value of some specific 12-string guitars. I had to go on a service call at work today in another city just up the road. After lunch, I decided to stop by the local music store there because they are a Seagull dealer. I had never played a Seagull before and wanted to see what they were all about. I've been looking at 12-string acoustics on and off for the past 5 years or so, but haven't really run across one that fits my taste in my price range. (The one exception to this was a Simon & Patrick Cedar Top 12 about 5 years ago. However, that dealer has since gone out of business and it is extremely hard to find S&P guitars around here.) I got to play a Seagull Cedar Top 12 today at the shop and the sound and feel was very nice. I've been looking for a cedar top 12-string for awhile. This one had the Godin I electronics and was in good shape. Tiny scuff marks on the back, but nothing big. The shop owner has it marked down to $379. Not sure about how good of a price this is. I have also been looking at the the Alvarez Artist Series 12. However, I'm not sure how much more it cost to order with the electronics. I know this is not a cedar top, but Alvarez has a good reputation with 12 string models. Anybody have any experience with both Alvarez and Seagull and the advantages of one over the other? Also, does anybody know of another manufacturer that makes a 12 string Cedar top? My price range is around $400. I'm not looking for a high-end 12, just the best bang for the buck to get into a 12. $400 w/o a case is really my upper limit as I just got my Taylor 410-E-LTD recently. I'm looking to purchase a 12 around April (my birthday). Any insight or suggestion on the 12 string is appreciated.
Members Freeman Keller Posted February 8, 2007 Members Posted February 8, 2007 A dear internet friend has as Seagull S12+ and absolutely loves it. I've never seen it (or him) but he sent me a cd of his playing on it and I must say it is a wonderful sounding instrument. He posts on this forum and at the Cafe' under the name "Eppito". If you would like I can PM you his name and e-mail addy. Also, hang around the Cafe' a bit. There was a thread a while back on less expensive 12 strings and I know the S12+ was discussed. http://p082.ezboard.com/The-12String-Cafe/ftheunofficialmartinguitarforumfrm150
Members KATMAN Posted February 8, 2007 Members Posted February 8, 2007 The Seagull may be your best buy for $400.This includes a solid cedar top and electronics, sounds like a good deal.I've seen Alvarez go for $300,but no solid cedar top and no electronics.Snatch up the Seagull,Tomorrow it might be gone!
Members MattSkibaIsGOD Posted February 9, 2007 Members Posted February 9, 2007 the Alvarez may not have a solid cedar top, but it does have a solid spruce top.

Not the ones I've seen, but then I didn't pay that much attention. That might even up the score here.I'm glad you pointed it out.But if it's cedar he prefers, than the Segull would be a good choice.

Members jsgates Posted February 9, 2007 Author Members Posted February 9, 2007 $379 for the Seagull Cedar top seems to be a pretty good price w/ electronics. I've been searching around to get an idea of how much these cost new. The one the nearby shop has is simply shopworn, no damage. From what I can tell the Simon & Patricks go for around $500 with electronics, but I can't locate an average price for the Seagull Coastline Series 12. Can anyone confirm any of this pricing?
Members ESL94 Posted February 9, 2007 Members Posted February 9, 2007 That Seagull is a good price w/electronics...You will like the wide & fast neck. I have a hard time putting down my M12....play it all the time.
