An Evening in Ann Arbor, MI

It was pretty cold outside on a Michigan night in February, but meanwhile there was a blistering firestorm raging inside The Ark Wednesday.

We saw Tommy Emmanuel last night here in Ann Arbor.

He took the stage with three Matons ( A cutaway dreadnaught, a 00 and a jumbo) and exploded within about 10 seconds.

He played with a severely sliced thumb he had split open in his performance the previous night. If you have seen him perform, you will understand how this could happen.

He played one set.

A little nice patter, but mostly just tune after jaw-dropping tune.

He played several from Endless Road including the title cut and Over the Rainbow (replete with all the cascading harmonics) he played his head-turning 2007 Grammy-nominated Gameshow Rag/Cannonball Rag from The Mystery, the Beatles medley with an astonishing arrangement of Lady Madonna, Blue Moon, Waltzing Matilda, & too many to list or even remember.

He played non-stop for 1hr:45 min.

Then he returned for an additional 15 minute encore. Amazing.

He tweaked his truss rod when he returned to the stage. If you know Matons, this 2-ft long truss rod wrench goes through the end pin hole all the way straight through the body up to the trussnut in the neck heel. So this adjustment became part of the show and offered up as a bit of comic relief, allowing his audience to catch their collective breath.

His encore included Avalon, Caravan, Guitar Rag, and several early other pop standards.

He stayed after the show to mingle and sign autographs.

Can I shamefully admit that I have never heard nor seen Emmanuel - but all the time hearing so much about him. Could someone point me to a YouTube or someother clip to at least listen to. And a "must buy" cd.

Freeman,

Get his Up Close dvd:http://www.certifiedguitarplayer.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=5

it is marketed as a "lesson" but there is no tab booklet, and it is really just him in a living room setting explaining his different guitar techniques. Alt. bass, moving base lines, etc., but he plays a bunch of his older standards in a performance style, then takes a few of them and slows them down to highlight different areas. There is no "put your ring finger here" type stuff. You HAVE to hear/see him do his medley of Day Tripper/Lady Madonna.

When you have access to a high speed connection, download his performance from the Woodsongs Radio Hour. It is Video from the sound stage. A little grainy, but great. You can find it here:

this is an older one

this one if from this month:

I also have the Live at Sheldon Hall concert dvd, but the sound was done very poorly, I am surprised he released it. I just got the Live at Her Majesty's Theater dvd, but have yet to watch it. The guy is in a league of his own.
