Members vchizzle1 Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 well I got an acoustic again finally. my Guild D-30 and a cheap 12 string got stolen from me a few years ago. I'm mostly an electric player now, but I've been wanting to get an acoustic for a long time. I tried out quite a few and ended up getting a Larrivee D-03WL(walnut). I haven't played it as much as I'd like to yet cause my band rehearsals take up alot of spare time. but so far I love it. I was looking at mahogany, rosewood and sapele models. the 1st trip, I was thinking I wanted to go mahogany or sapele. the 2nd trip I narrowed it down to the sapele and walnut. surprisingly the sapele sounded better to my ears than the regular mahogany did:confused: but in the end, I went with the walnut. I felt it was a bit more "focused" sounding than the hog and sapele, but still really open and big sounding. the rosewood was just a little too focused sounding to my ears and didn't quite have the punchy midrange I was after. the tone is perfect to me. I love the neck shape and feel. the action is good....possibly a HAIR high. I read they set them up this way purposefully and let the player decide if they want it lowered. so I'll wait awhile til I'm more used to it before deciding if I want it lowered. the model tag(or whatever you call it) on the inside appears to be signed by Jean mabe??? - which is pretty cool if it is. anyone know how many WL's they made? I read 75, but not sure if that's true as I don't know the source. here's some pics:
Members Cldplytkmn Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 i think it was 75 of each of the 3 body styles... looks fantastic, lots of larrivee lovers around here (myself included). Congrats.

I saw a different model with them on it and thought it looked sweet:thu: anyone know how much they are and where they can be bought? man, I really love the way this thing looks, sounds, feels and plays. the only thing I've noticed is my acoustic playing skills have diminished a bit without having one for awhile:freak: looks like I need to practice up! biggest thing is streching my left hand for "wide" chords...my electrics are only 25" scale. well, the more acoustic I play, the cleaner and more I'll be able to reach on electric. so it'll be good no matter how I look at it:)

Don't know exactly what Larrivee is using these days. Maybe call and ask someone at Elderly. http://elderly.com/accessories/items/1020E.htm

One option is to order Schaller-type buttons made of real ebony from stewmac.com here: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Knobs/Tuner_knobs/Schaller_Replacement_Tuner_Knobs.html FYI: a couple of us went this route with our Larrivees but be warned: the slot inside the button tends to grind away if you're overzealous with tuning, causing the button to eventually spin without gripping. You can also order "ebonoid" buttons direct from Larrivee which are actually made of a material akin to micarta (and may be more durable) but with a simulated wood grain: http://www.larriveewearables.com/sess/utn;jsessionid=1545d2874a197b7/shopdata/0070_Parts/product_details.shopscript?article=0150_Synthetic%2BEbony%2BTuner%2BButtons%2B%3D28PETB-00%3D29 BTW - another popular option is to upgrade to Gotoh 510 tuners which are direct drop-ins and give the headstock a more "modern" appearance. If you're looking for something more "vintage" though, some folks have installed the open-back Grover Sta-Tites but the mounting screws do not line up, so you run the risk of leaving one of the old unsightly screw holes exposed.

Members Tony Burns Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 Congrats ! Nice choice .
Members EvilTwin Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 very nice. what is the MT? I've seen an V at the end of a model # too, what'f that mean? If I'm not mistaken the "MT" stands for "mahogany top," which Larrivee also makes in very limited quantities. (I'm not sure on the "V," but I would hazard a guess as to that standing for "Venetian cutaway.")

Members hammergjh Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 I picked up the rosewood version of that guitar in May or June. Stunning, full bodied gorgeous sounding dread. Congrats. Be cautious this winter and humidify it well, though. These are all solid wood guitars and very sensitive. I'm getting some sharp fret ends on mine after leaving it out of the case for about 2 weeks. I'm trying to re-humidify it and reduce these as much as possible before taking it back to the shop for a fret dressing.
Members gthom Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 Looks great. I'm hoping to be in the market for a new acoustic soon and Larrivee will probably be near the top of my list. The ones I've played have always sounded great...
