Members martingibson70 Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 amps or serious equipment? I'm up to 5 months. It's been rough though. A $500 G&L S500 almost got me 2 weeks ago.
Members Pascal Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 So far for me it's been 4 years between each new guitar.... with usually an amp squeezed in the middle. So, 2 years on average, I guess. Here are the details. Guess when I had money, and when I didn't have any... 1984: first guitar: steel string => broken in 88 1988: first electric (Strat) => sold in 2004 to pay taxes1989: first Amp (tube) => broken in 1999 (no funds to repair)1994: Nylon string guitar2000: Semi hollow guitar2000: new tube amp => sold in 2004 to pay taxes2000: new ss practice amp2006: gypsy jazz guitar
Members Faber Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 Had to buy another amp last month cause I joined yet another band. Apart from that, it's been 2
Members Phlat Phive Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 It's been about three or four years since I last bought a guitar, and about six or seven since my last amp.
Members kwakatak Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 7 years or more between guitars. Small stuff is my personal vice.
Members Whalebot Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 I'm averaging a new git every three months, but I usually return or sell pretty damn quick.
Members Tony Burns Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 how does twenty years plus grab ya - havent bought a new guitar from 1981 up to 2005 - had to break down and pick up that Martin i always wanted , i also picked up a decent classical a few months latter .
Members Cldplytkmn Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 i haven't bought a guitar since october 05... but the one before that was in july 05
Members whit townsend Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 It may not be a guitar, but I tend to make a maj gear purchase about every 1-2 yrs. Will sell or trade some stuff about every 3-5 yrs.
Members Whalebot Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 I did go ten years between my first and second purchase though, then I started farting around with Martins.
Members bigby Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 Twenty years ago I went through guitars/gear every few months; depending on the amount of gigs and rates at pawn shops. I was also always interested in trying to upgrade since I was restricted to the $250-$600 price range; and even those purchases required some time in lay-a-way. Now I'm pretty happy with what I have. I'm at a point in my life where I try to separate wants from needs since I have a young son and another one on the way.
Members bbarkow Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 I don't permanently own any gear. I am merely a conduit through which it flows.
Members T.B. Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 In recent past about every 4 to 6 months I've convinced myself, I'm close to having the lineup of git's I want/need. I'll be for certain in about another 26 hours give or take. Trina
Members Hamhand Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 I don't permanently own any gear. I am merely a conduit through which it flows. REAL good answer. I make a pretty poor conduit, but your statement is the only true one. I purchased two in the last month, one of which I told my son, "When Daddy's gone this here is the guitar you want". (It's not the most expensive of the lot either).
Members dmn23 Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 It's been four years since my last guitar, but I'm trying to resist the urge to pull the trigger on a nice little Reverend I played last weekend. As far as other gear goes...shoot...seems like I pick up that stuff all the time.
Members dmn23 Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 I don't permanently own any gear. I am merely a conduit through which it flows. Interesting. That's exactly the way I look at my old Porsche. I have a responsibility to enjoy it, make sure it looks good when I take it out, and to keep it in the best possible condition for the next owner.
Members guitarjedi33 Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 it really depends on how much time i prick around on ebay or visit my favorite music store... i have bought four so far this year and have gone from one guitar and a practice amp two years ago to having a full pa, drums, bass rig, 20 some guitars, lights, and a half dozen guitar amps... i really have a problem with this and need some kind of 12 step program:cry: ...i need to quit buying {censored} but {censored} it.. i'm no quitter:thu:

Members Freeman Keller Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 Well, I haven't bought a guitar for over 25 years. Then my wife gave me one and that should have been that. Then I started building them. Now I can't pass the tool section of the hardware store without fondling the routers and checking the clamps. But I still haven't bought one in over 25 years. dmn23, what'cha driving?

Members dmn23 Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 dmn23, what'cha driving? Nuthin' special. We're certainly not talking about an old 550 or 904 or anything like that. Heck, not even a 911 for that matter. It's a 17 year old 944S2 that the previous owner kept in shockingly original condition, and it just seems criminal for me not to do the same.
Members Hudman Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 I went 8 years. I started buying and selling gear like crazy after I discovered guitar forums.

Nice ride and in truely beautiful condition. When I graduated in 1969 (and bought my Yamaha) I almost bought a 912, but I was racing boats back then and needed a tow car. So I bought a Z-28 Camero which I would give a lot to still own, even tho you can't buy gas for 'em any more. But I'm still a motorhead and Momma lets me keep my toys (I tell her it is part of my IRA) http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f387/Freeman_Keller/BMW/Toys1.jpg
Members EastCoastPlayah Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 With great restaint, Feb 2002 was the last guitar purchase - now I dream about building them. I have most of the materials to build 10 more! help me before I kill (a tree) again.....

And is that a Morgan 4/4 back there? Very, very cool. You know, back in my college days we used to say that the only things that really mattered were girls, cars, and guitars -- and not necessarily in that order (well, not all the time, anyway). That's a beautiful collection. Thanks for sharing.
