Guest Anonymous Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 On the heels of my recent electric Yamaha SC-600 purchase for my classroom, I began a search for an acoustic classroom guitar. One visit to Zeppelin Music in L.A., ten minutes from where I live in Pasadena, did the trick. It just goes to show one can score a great deal and a solidly sounding guitar for $150, including gig bag. I found a new Samick/Greg Bennett Design D-14CE that plays and sounds rich unplugged and plugged. These are going for between $390 and $445 at online retailers. It wasn't a factory second, it wasn't used, and it had no cosmetic or structural issues with it. (Even a Canon EOS 20D SLR digital cam flash doesn't do the guitar justice.) The cats at the shop reminded me of those folks in old-time hardware shops. Yeah, they want to make a buck but they're not overly interested in the bottom line. You can shoot the breeze with them while downing a cup of coffee and carry on a real conversation, tell a few jokes, and engage in friendly repartee and bantering. It sort of restores your faith in humanity. Talk about value for the buck: solid cedar top laminated rosewood back and sides scalloped top bracing rosewood fingerboard slotted pearl square fret markers herringbone body binding rear purfling inlay bone nut & saddle Grover tuners Fishman Clearwave 50 EQ

Members 2ifbyC Posted February 17, 2007 Members Posted February 17, 2007 That's SWEET! Where have all the ol' Mom & Pop music stores gone? I know, I know...
Members Danocoustic Posted February 17, 2007 Members Posted February 17, 2007 The "cheap" guitars of today are WORLDS above what was available when I started playing! That's a nice-looking instrument
Guest Anonymous Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 Aug, 2if, Dano: Thanks for your early responses. The D-14CE really was a steal, brick-and-mortar shops ARE the foundation of the industry, and the less expensive guitars sound and feel better than what I grew up playing as a kid. I took it into the classroom the past three days because the 4th-graders were learning CCR's "Have You Ever Seen The Rain?" It sounded and played beautifully. The warm sound of cedar just projects and fretting chords is a breeze. Brought it home instead of leaving it locked inside a classroom closet. Uh-oh, are my Martins gonna take a back seat to this upstart, at least for now? {:=) Yeah, I think I did commit larceny with this new D-14CE, scoring it at 33-37% of the regular purchase price of $4xx-45x. Sometimes, the situation just comes together seamlessly. Efficacy is achieved. The brick-and-mortar shop knew what they could sell it for but they treated this schoolteacher extremely well. I guess they understood and appreciated that we're overworked and underpaid. It didn't hurt for them to know, too, this guitar was the one to be used teaching songs to the Young Peeps. Play on, play often....Goofyfoot.
Members AugTPD Posted February 18, 2007 Members Posted February 18, 2007 I'm glad they hooked you up with a deal on that, especially since you are using it to teach kids with. That's the nice thing about the smaller stores. And I think Teachers deserve a little special treatment sometimes with how much the school systems pay them.
Members KENUTIN Posted February 18, 2007 Members Posted February 18, 2007 Excellent looking guitar. Quite a bargain. There's a mom and pop store in my area. Thank goodness. They did you right.
