Moving and a seperation has left me without a guitar for the first time in a while.. So I am looking to pick a new accoustic and thought I would ask here to get a good idea about which guitars to start looking at..

I am thinking in the 500-800 dollar range is about where I am at, so any suggestions will be more than welcome.

Takamine EAN10C - $799 with hardcase on sale at Guitar Center. Biggest bang for buck. When not on sale, it is $1049 at GC and $899 online. It's electronics are sweet sounding, too. It is a plain looking guitar becuase its value is its sound. Plays and sounds much more like a $1200 and up guitar. You could add a pickguard if you wanted to dress it up or protect the top. Unplugged or plugged, it sounds better than (no flames, please) the similarly priced Taylor or Martin.

That is an excellent price range. You will have tons of great choices.

Larrivee 03 Series is one of the best in the $700 - $800 range. You can pick up a Guild GAD Series in the $600 - $700 range. Epiphone Masterbilt is solid in the $500 - $650 range. Parkwood (made by Cort exclusively at Guitar Center and Musicians Friend) is solid in the $500 - $700 range. Alvarez, Washburn and Breedlove make great guitars in that price range too.

All of the above are solid wood guitars with excellent playability and tone. Larrivee is my personal favorite in your price range. I picked up a mint condition 2006 Larrivee OM-03 for $600 shipped (hardshell case included). Larrivee features exceptional quality, playability and tone. They are hand made in Canada. They compare to Martin and Taylors that cost hundreds more.

...because they always do in threads like this, for good reason: go play several models. GCs are great for this because of the diversity of stock and the fact that they leave you alone, usually. The advice you get here is excellent, but combine that with hands-on evaluation.

Welcome to the forum - this question is asked about twice a week - ( and answered ) I like hudmans answer as well as Michael Martin's -- whats really important that you play alot of guitars at every music store , and dont forget to look at the used stuff ( alot of bargains out their ) good luck

Nothing wrong with buying used. Heck, some of the used stuff is in better shape than the "new" stuff sold at the guitar stores.

I find it hard to buy new, you lose so much money right away. I recently picked up an old '77 Gibson and an '81 Ibanez, both for just about the same you want to spend. New strings and set up and they are sweet to play. And I get to alternate.

Just make sure you get some advice on evaluating a used guitar before plunking down lots of hard earned money. I know I've gone through this with electrics and found some 'adjustments' that couldn't be undone without spending lots of money.
