Laminate Top Guitars...

I'm looking to try some out on my next go at the guitar shop.

I live in Canada and I already own an Art & Lutherie Wild Cherry.

The issue with my current lam. guitar is that it's neck has come up and the action is very high (I mean, I like medium-high action anyway, and it's just really high now). The facts that there is no truss rod to fix the relief and the saddle and nut are about as low as they can be without adversely affecting the sound. So I've decided to look for something else. I don't want to spend too much, but I don't really have a price limit (and given that I'm looking for a laminate guitar, it shouldn't really cost all that much).

I was thinking a Norman B15. I play all sorts of guitars so things like nut width and playability aren't huge issues. I want to be able to play any guitar that I pick up just as well as the rest.

So far I have the Norman so any suggestions would be helpful :) .

I have a Jasmine ES33C that I bought brand new from an ebay dealer for $199 + shipping - including a hardshell case. It sounds amazingly good for the money, and looks very nice too (back and sides are lam mahogany with a pretty lacewood veneer). It came with electronics for that price too.

I just checked. Here's one that recently sold: http://cgi.ebay.com/Takamine-Jasmine-ES33C-Acoustic-Electric-Guitar-ES33-C_W0QQitemZ290063841287QQihZ019QQcategoryZ113481QQcmdZViewItem

is there a reason that you want an all laminate guitar? There are a ton of solid top/laminate back and sides guitars that are under $300 that will blow away an all laminate guitar in sound quality.

I'm not sure I'd make that generalization. Once you get down below 300 bucks, they're all going to be hit or miss. I've played a LOT of cheap guitars - and at that price range, I'd challenge anyone to tell the difference between a solid top and plywood by sound alone - especially in brand new instruments.

I'm not saying all guitars with a solid top will sound tons better, but certain ones I think do. I've played several Alvarez models that were around $300 or less that I don't think any lam guitar could compare to. But some companies are making solid top guitars that aren't all that much better than laminate.

The Maple Lake guitars (by Wechter) aren't bad at all for laminate top instruments. I'd agree that in the lower range, a solid top doesn't always mean it's better. I've played a few laminate top guitars that sounded pretty good.

Just thought I'd plug the Alvarez AD60CK- I love mine. It has figured(lam) Doa top, back, and sides and sounds great plugged in or acoustic. I've seen em used anywhere from $200-400. For $300 up though there are definetly solid tops to consider. If maybe you have a higher end or dont want to worry about humidity check out the AD60CK.

Yeah, why the heck do you want an all-laminate guitar anyway? That said, I'm going to do my usual and plug the Ibanez ArtWood series http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitar/navigation?page=1&N=100001&Ntk=All&Ntt=Ibanez%2BArtWood&Nty=1&Ns=P_Price%7C0 and Cobalt by Carvin http://www.carvin.com/products/group.php?CID=CBNE, all of which have solid tops and are made by Cort. If you must have a laminated top, Norman makes nice guitars and the Alvarez RD8 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Alvarez-RD8-Regent-Series-Dreadnought-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=518715 and the Takamine G320 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Takamine-G320-Dreadnought-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=516299 are both decent guitars if you're on a budget.

kind confussed about this post - solid top guitars have alot better tone and sound than the laminates , and if you spend a small amount of time looking you can find them for about the same price , as well as be alot happier in the long run ( unless you plan on using it as a back-up canoe paddle ?) I didnt say this to piss anybody off but in the long run laminate tops are disapointing .

This may be true in the majority of cases (I have no way of knowing) but it is certainly not true in all cases. Listen to Freeman's FG-150 on the pin test (also linked on the thread "What we have learned") that is an all-laminate guitar with plastic saddle and nut.
