I had some time to kill today so I went and tried out a few guitars. I got to play a Gibson J-45, Hummingbird and a Dove, a Morgan (I forget what model) and a Seagull Artist dread. I have to say that my favourite was the hummingbird. It just felt right in my hands. And then there was the sound. It was glorious ! Too bad it was 3700 CAD. The J-45 felt a little dead to me. The Dove was really nice as well, but it was 4200 CAD . The Morgan was exotic...had the walnut back and sides. It also sounded amazing , but it felt different, like the neck was somehow longer (it almost felt like its scale was like a baritone, but it was 25.5"). The Seagull Artist was the cheapest of the bunch at 1100 CAD, but it sounded really good too.

Sorry for the long post, I just had to tell someone about it.

Shopping for guitars is fun!

Interesting observation on the J-45. Several years ago at Gryphon Stringed Instruments I was checking out a number of Martin, Taylor, CFox, etc. guitars and happened to pick up a J-45. Out of all the guitars I played that day, that one had the best combination of action and tone  - unfortunately, I didn't have $2k to burn

That's a gas. Just goes to show why there are so many guitars out there. The Hummer I played was dead and the J-45 rang like a church bell. Humph! What do you know.

Yeah, maybe it just had an older set of strings or something. It just didnt feel or sound as nice as the others I played. The Dove and the Hummingbird just absolutely felt alive in my hands!

i agree on the hummingbird - it's lovely to look at, play and smell
even playing simple cowboy chords makes my heart swoon which is fortunate b/c that's all i can mostly play :)

i rationalized the cost this way -- i have the rest of my life to enjoy the 'bird and hopefully when i'm all old, i can give my grandkids a really cool vintage (by then) guitar. of course i'm single with no kids so i don't have to worry about sacrificing any necessities!

Those cowboy chords can go a long way...didn't seem to slow down Johnny Cash.

Those Hummingbirds are beautiful guitars. So is the J-45. Shopping for guitars is fun, but don't you know that stuff will give you GAS?
;)

:p

Yeah after that I got major GAS pains, but I think I'm pretty much set on what my next acoustic is gonna be. Once classes are out in april for me, Im gonna work towards a Guild GAD-50E. Sure, a hummingbird would be great, but I would be so paranoid in taking it and playing out with it. I dont think I could justify spending almost 4000 dollars for a guitar (paying for schooling is my priority). But dang, it sure was nice to at least play it!
