Members olsm75 Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 If you always wanted a Gibson J-50 but didn't want to pay the asking price, this is a guitar worth looking at. GC sold me one for $382 out the door and I must say I'm nothing short of amazed at the tone this puppy puts out.. You may have to play a few first to find a good one but the time is worth it.., they can truly be phenomenal guitars that stand up well to any other guitar made.

I've tried an AJ-500R and thought it was plain fantastic. $382 out the door for the hog version is unbelievable. In general, I'm very impressed with the Masterbilt series. Congrats.
Members rjoxyz Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 That price is crazy. Did this include the Masterbilt Case/Bag?
Members kwakatak Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 Yeah, that is a helluva price!
Members DonK Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 At $382 I'd be racing to GC - a place I depise - to get one. Was it a floor model or something? (what am I saying, every guitar GC sells is a well-used floor model).
Members Tony Burns Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 Too many guitars and not enough money ! Im playing the Mega millions tonight , If i win i get one of everything !
Members DenverDave Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 Congrats! That is an even better price than I got on my DR-500M two weeks ago ($420.00 out the door). And I agree - they are not all made equal, but a good one is worth two to three times the asking price tone wise. I am really amazed with mine, and your gonna love yours...
Members Hudman Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 Great guitar and a great price. The Masterbilt line is based on the old Epiphones from the 1940's. Honestly, I think they have their own unique voice and are nothing like the Gibson guitars.
Members guitarcapo Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 I've been a fan of those guitars for a while now. Lots of bang for the buck. And you don't have to worry about dinging it up at that price.
Members riotshield Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 I made the mistake of stopping by GC during lunch today and they had several Masterbilts on "clearance", a DR-500M for $450 and DR-500P for about $470. I was intrigued by the 500P (solid maple body/sides, and I think neck). Just wondering, did you guys haggle down the price? The prices included the hard/soft case, but I saw the computer and it appears it's available w/o case for $80 less.
Members DenverDave Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 Mine was already marked down (to $370.00 sans case) because of a minor ding on the headstock, so I didn't need to cut a deal on the guitar, but I also bought the case and they knocked $20.00 off the case....

I hate how Guitar Center plays games with the cases for all of their guitars. The case comes with the Masterbilts when they are shipped from the plant. Guitar Center does the same thing with other guitar brands.

Good thing I won't even buy strings there; they'd probably charge me for the wrappers. What's next? Are they going to start charging for the shopping bags too - just like IKEA?
Members RKW Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 My AJ-500ME is in shipment from Music123 and should be here in about 3-4 days. If I like it, I'll keep it.
Members guitarist21 Posted February 23, 2007 Members Posted February 23, 2007 The case comes with the Masterbilts when they are shipped from the plant. Guitar Center does the same thing with other guitar brands. GC didn't have an EF-500R in stock, so I had them order it and I was there when they took it out of the box. I used the Musician's Friend price as a reference point and haggled it down a little bit. But I can understand how if you've got a guitar on the floor with no case in sight they would try to make you pay a little extra for the case. Its really too bad it works like that. Ellen

I know I've said this various times before on this forum but here it goes again: I love my AJ 500M. It's the best sounding/playing guitar I've ever owned. John Pearse PBs bring out the best in mine.Congratulations on the $382 deal. That's a VERY good price for this guitar!
Members J. Posted February 24, 2007 Members Posted February 24, 2007 The case comes with the Masterbilts when they are shipped from the plant. Guitar Center does the same thing with other guitar brands. I hate it too. Guitar Center lost their right to be a Rickenbacker dealer because of this.
Members Hudman Posted February 24, 2007 Members Posted February 24, 2007 I hate it too. Guitar Center lost their right to be a Rickenbacker dealer because of this. They scam the heck out of Fender buyers all the time. "Hey, I went to Guitar Center and got an American Series Strat for $899.00! They even sold me the $175.00 case for $125.00! I love Guitar Center!" Ummm, yeah dude, you just got screwed.
Members redpoint Posted February 24, 2007 Members Posted February 24, 2007 What is the difference between the AJ and DRs? I've got a Seagull S6, which looks more like an AJ than a DR. But they're both dreadnoughts, right? Is there a difference in sound?
Members danzigdan Posted February 25, 2007 Members Posted February 25, 2007 I bought a Masterbilt DR-500 last month at GC for $305 + $79 for the case. I'm stunned by this guitar. They told me SOME of the Masterbilts come with cases, but because of the blowout price on the guitar the cases were seperate. I know it's b.s. but I couldn't argue with the price.
Members danzigdan Posted February 25, 2007 Members Posted February 25, 2007 What is the difference between the AJ and DRs? I'm not the acoustic expert here but the AJ is an "advanced jumbo". To my eye the AJ's body is a bit bigger and thicker. IMHO, the AJ was a bit boomier and breathier sounding and the DR was focused more in the midrange with a slightly more steely sound. That's why I decided on the DR.
Members olsm75 Posted February 25, 2007 Author Members Posted February 25, 2007 They had it on sale with case for $459. I offered $400 and they countered at $420 which I accepeted. Then they couldn't find the case so price was reduced to $382 w/o case inc. tax.
Members kwakatak Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 Yeah - I seem to recall that they came with padded "hard" gigbags.
