What strings are you using on your Masterbilt?

I bought an AJ-500RE at the Musician's Friend factory outlet last weekend. It sounded phenomenal in the store, but now that I have it home it doesn't sound as good. It's trebly, and has developed an annoying midrange bark as the strings have lost their newness.

Has anybody tried the Elixer nanoweb PBs? What are you all using?

One thing about playing guitars in stores, is that sometimes, when you strum a chord on one guitar, ten others resonate.

Once at home, the same chord on the same guitar might not sound as full . ;)

Thanks, but I do take that into consideration. I've been doing this for a long, long time. :)

I have the same issue wih my Parkwood. My issue appeared when I changed strings (I put on D'Addario EXP's) I was told to try putting Ebony bridge pins in to wam things up. I'm also going to try some Martin and some 80/20 D'Addario's (both sets are 12's). I can let you know how that works out, I'll be doing it this weekend

If you can hold off a couple of more days I'm about ready to post the Great String Test. It will have at least 5 different strings (including Nano PB's) on one guitar at two different ages (so you can listen to just the string sound), and will have the same three sets of strings on four guitars (so you can hear how different woods and sizes respond).

Am nearing completion and hope to post by Sunday.

And 55gibby, if you haven't heard the Great Bridge Pin test it is linked at the end of the first post in the Sick Guitar sticky (I'll put the String Test there also). Might want to listen before you buy new pins.

I checked it out... good stuff!! I'm still gong to try the ebony bridge pins for two reasons

1) They do warm up the tone some, but may add some mud to the lows

2) I already bought the pins

This is just my first experiment with this guitar and, this is the first acoustic I've owned in a long time. eventually I'll e putting on a bone nut and saddle but that's a couple of months off. My Parkwood hasn't really began to open up yet, I guessing it will sound pretty different once it does (the top is pretty tight grained)

Looking forward to the string test as well

On my HD-28 (also rosewood) I favor DR Sunbeams in 13-56. A little hard to find, but worth the effort. They have a very balanced tone after break-in. A side benefit is slightly reduced string tension due to the round core. John Pearse is another favorite.

For a coated string, I like Dean Markley Alchemy Gold PB's in the same gauge. A bit on the stiff side, which has been my experience with Martin SP's.
