Members Michael Martin Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 Got my Yamaha CJ838s this past Friday. I only know of this guitar because one of y'all recommended it in a thread many months ago. I tell you what--I just love it. This guitar is at least 25 years old, and looks it. Not abused, but very well-used. Really full sound with great projection and volume, and unbelievable highs that ring clearly and sustain fantastically. A bit less warm than my old 'bird overall (maybe that's rosewood vs. hog?), but with none of the brittleness of some maple stuff I've played...anyway, I just love it. I think I said that already. I like the neck on my 'bird better--this one's just a tad chunkier--but it plays really smooth. And oh, those bodacious inlays! Can't wait to get it electrified for stage use. To the forgotten recommender: Thanks, whoever you are...
Members Hudman Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 I'm glad you're loving your new guitar. I came close to buying a used Yamaha CY818SB on Ebay. It was pretty old and I never played one before. I went with a used Washburn J28SDL instead. I got it Friday and I've been playing the heck out of it. It'ss in my lap right now. My Larrivee is getting jealous. Here's the Ebay auction for the Yamaha:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=ADME%3AL%3ARTQ%3AUS%3A1&viewitem=&item=120083990721&rd=1

Members AugTPD Posted February 27, 2007 Members Posted February 27, 2007 Glad you're happy. I think most folks with Yamaha guitars from that era are satisfied. It's making me want one now.......
Members babablowfish Posted February 27, 2007 Members Posted February 27, 2007 Congratulations. I've never had the pleasure of playing one of those. Hope I will some day. Pictures?
Members learn'r Posted February 27, 2007 Members Posted February 27, 2007 Congrats Michael! May your fingers get sore getting use to her.
Members Michael Martin Posted February 27, 2007 Author Members Posted February 27, 2007 Pictures? Here's the auction page: http://cgi.ebay.com/YAMAHA-CJ-838S-COUNTRY-JUMBO-ACOUSTIC-GUITAR-GIBSON_W0QQitemZ280078887123QQihZ018QQcategoryZ33033QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem After I get the pu/pot in, I'll take some better photos and post. This guitar is just awesome--has tremendously powerful/dynamic sound with really amazing overtones. It's almost like it has built-in reverb. I'm finding that the thicker neck is not a big deal--it's an adjustment after playing the 'bird (or my Tak or strat), but not a hard one to make. And not as thick (hence not as big an adustment) as my tak 12 by any means. At first my sweet 'bird was jealous, but I sweet-talked her--explained that she was too precious and irreplaceable to ever take out of the house or into a smoky bar. It's my stage Tak that has something to worry about...

Members Mosser Posted March 1, 2007 Members Posted March 1, 2007 Man I feel bad for the guy who bought the washburn over the yamaha cj-838s. I Have one and it's one of the sickest guitars I have ever played and I have played alot, trust me. I'd put it up against the best taylors, gibsons, and martins. But hey, maybe you got a good washburn, but I haven't played one yet that wasn't good for anything more than fire wood.

Hey Rickkk, Got it in December off of eBay. Great guitar. Had a bone nut and saddle made for it and had it buffed out and she was good to go. Very sweet tone with loads of sustain, as I am sure you know. I had been hankering for one for a long time and now my guitar-buying days are over.

This is a very friendly and supportive community. Remarks like that will not make you any friends. Also, the "guy" who bought the Washburn is a highly respected and long-time member of the group.

I never realized I was highly respected.

Members DenverDave Posted March 1, 2007 Members Posted March 1, 2007 Nice guitar! I love jumbos and that really looks like a nice one - hole in the top aside...
Members Michael Martin Posted March 1, 2007 Author Members Posted March 1, 2007 Nice guitar! I love jumbos and that really looks like a nice one - hole in the top aside... Heck, it saved the previous owner's life. Looks like it was a .45 slug...I figure that's good karma.

Members ogeskimo Posted March 2, 2007 Members Posted March 2, 2007 New here. I'm looking at buying a particular Yamaha CJ838s and had a couple extra questions to ask if anyone can help me. My '70 FG 300 has the red Nippon Gakki sticker inside so I know it's Japanese-made but are these guitars ? It's a long-distance acquisition so I don't have the guitar in front of me. Is it printed on that brace under the top or on the neck block ? Also, he says it's a solid top which I believe, but also says it's solid back and sides of which I think he's mistaken. BTW - he's asking $350 which I thought was fair. I love my FG 300 and think old Yamaha's are way underrated. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Members Mosser Posted March 2, 2007 Members Posted March 2, 2007 I have one, a cj 838s. On the sticker inside with the model number on it, it shows where it was made. Mine says, Made in Taiwan. I typed my serial number in on the yamaha site but it wasn't listed. Anyhow. post a couple of pictures if you have some. I've only ever played mine and I love it. If I find out anymore about them I'll post it. 350 sounds like a good deal if its in fairly good condition.
