I just bought a Takamine EN-60C. When I slide the gain all the way up it makes a bit of "scratch" noise. Is there something I can do?

By the way it's an old Takamine preamp with 3 band EQ (bass, treble, gain). See the picture :

Not sure what you mean by scratch. Do you hear a "scratch" when you move the slider, or do you hear the "scratch" when you play.

On the former, you can get a can of contact cleaner from an electronics supply store which is very easy to use. You spray a little bit into the pot and slide it back and forth a little bit and you're all set. Take the usual precautions to protect the guitar finish. If the preamp is removable taking it out before you perform the spraying procedure is preferable.

I had a similar problem when i used to have the En10 dread guitar, what happens in that when the faders of the pre amp especially the volume starts making a crackling sound when plugged into the PA, my guitar technician tells me it's due to 'carbon built up'. Take the guitar to a good electronic repairer who will clean it for you and solve the problem.

It's when I move the slider. I will try the contact cleaner before take it down to the repairman!!!

Thanks everybody:thu:

Sometimes with scratchy pots on an amp, you can twist the knobs back and forth a bunch of times fast, and the scratch goes away, without contact cleaner. Maybe try sliding them up and down multiple times to loosen any dust.
