Members baron85 Posted March 2, 2007 Members Posted March 2, 2007 Needed Time by Lightnin' Hopkins. What are the chord voicings for this? As far as I can tell, it's tuned down to Dmaj. I'm thinking I have the chords figured out, but it would be interesting to see if I'm write. Really, though, I'm having trouble with the turnaround. I can't for the life of me figure out what he's playing right there. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.
Members brahmz118 Posted March 4, 2007 Members Posted March 4, 2007 Hmm, this is a tough one. I'm not very fluent in Open D so it's hard for me to hear licks in that tuning. It doesn't help that the recording is in Eb -- so either Drop D or Open D with a capo / sped-up recording, or standard or Open E tuned down (or slowed down). I could be totally wrong, but my vote is for standard tuning, played in E, tuned down a half-step or slowed playback. I feel like I can hear open chord voicings -- the 1st position E major chord at the start with the 3rd string hammer-on, and the 1st position B7 chord in the turnaround. The turnaround is just E - B7 - E - B7. In this case, the B7 would first be played with an open 3rd string, but then the LH ring finger comes down for the 2nd beat. Not a hammer-on -- the note is re-articulated. E|-x---| B|-0---| G|-0-2-| D|-1---| A|-2---| E|-x---| Some of the parts in which the guitar doubles the vocal line would require voicings using barres at the 5th and 7th frets, but they're findable and playable. Anyway, that's how I hear it, though I could be way off. I admit I am biased towards standard tuning. Although I sometimes like the sound of open tunings, I'm usually too lazy to retune. If I hear a I, IV, and V, I'll just play those chords however I can, particularly for songs with vocals. Big fan of fingerstyle blues, though Getting more acquainted with Open D is on my to-do list.
