Case Humidity Update

Ran a little check yesterday. A few days ago I had recharged the humidifying element. This is in the Martin thermoplastic case for my OM-21. My RadioShack digital hygrometer read 78% when place up by the headstock, right next to the element. I put the meter in the sound-hole and let it stabilize overnight. Reading was 48%.

I left the PW Hygrometer out last night in the house. Read 35 RH this morning.

You should keep humidifying, but, we're through the "looking glass."

The danger months are behind us. Unless there is something really wrong with your guitar, or unless you keep your house/apartment really warm to drive down the humidity, guitar cracks are probably behind us for the rest of the winter.

The lowest my house read on my PW was 22 RH and that was during the cold snap when my pipes were freezing overnight.

Smooth sailing from here on, boys! :thu:

What's the problem with guitar?

Jim

No problem, all my guitars live in their cases with humidifying elements, and are closely monitored and replenished during the heating season.

The reason I did this is that I have seen some questions about how well humidity distributes itself throughout the case & guitar. Since the headstock area has the most room for a humidifying element, and is also the easiest place to put the hygrometer, that is where I put them. I just wanted to be sure that the body of the guitar was getting enough moisture, without having to go to a separate sound-hole type element. So in my case, it is, but YMMV as usual.

I keep my analog hygrometer in the space behind the neck in the center of case, have sponge under headstock and planet waves in soundhole. Had suffered action dropping on hi E and dried out fretboard. It has rectified itself, the action has come back to normal, humidity reading 45%

I just picked up a Martin HD-28.
And after reading all the threads here about the dangers of low humidity on an acoustic I went out a purchased a Kyser sound hole humidifier and a Honeywell hygrometer.
I'm still waiting on the Kyser humidifier so in the meantime I made a make shift one out of a plastic soapbox and sponge. I keep the soapbox near the headstock along with the hygrometer. Before placing the soapbox in the case I was getting a reading of 32% after a bit of time it's gone up to 40%. Should the humidity level go higher? I'm in Denver where it's still pretty cold and dry.

What's nice about the Honeywell hygrometer is that I don't have to keep opening the case to get a reading. It comes with a base unit and also a remote unit with it's own display, which fits nicely near the headstock. The remote unit sends it's reading (temp and humidity) to the base unit.

If anyone's interested the model is TM005X.
One last thing, the base unit supports up to 3 remote units.

Keep repleneshing the sponge, it will take a while for the moisture to build up in the case. 40-50% should be no problem.
