Foam Material in Planet Wave

Hi

I hope this post isn't viewed as useless information, but as a FYI.

I found my PW sound hole humidifier didn't seem to release much humidity. No scientific evidence, just monitored my digital hygrometer. My un educated guess blamed the small holes and limited circulation. I eventually changed to dampits and some sponges inside plastic bags that I keep inside my hard case.

For the heck of it, and because it wasnt being used, I cut open my PW humidifier and discovered that the foam used within is the green florist type that I'm sure most everyone has seen at one point or another.

Florist use it to stick flower stems into in order to make a flower arrangment. I guess because its soft, and because it holds moisture a long time. The downside is that the material doesn't spring back to shape. It dents easily and crumbles when dry. But it does hold water.

This material might be an option for those considering a homemade humidifer of some sort, but I doubt one needs to throw away their current foam in place of this.

Now Im going to go find something constructive to.

Bye.

Thats good to know and thanks. I've had acceptable results with the old kitchen sponge in a baggie trick, but I also have one of those clay pot thingies. I've never been satisfied that it put out much moisture. And it seems like the Dampit snakes couldn't hold very much water either, altho I do have them in the soundhole of a couple of gits.

I definitely think my Freeman Keller sponge is best, so easy to make, but I like having the PW humidifier in the soundhole, I wouldn't want to put a sponge in my guitar body, I keep my accurate hygrometer connected to the bottom of the case, it is neat, magnetic mount, can just take it out if I want to use it for something else. It is right behind the neck mount in front of the case compartment, the sponge is underneath the headstock and I'm keeping a constant 45% hum with the PW in SH. And now, I have a very healthy guitar, action is normal , won't have to get it set up. Still thinking bout getting a triple 0

Yes and come to think of it, you can squeeze a regular kitchen sponge to determine how wet it is and to get rid of excess water, but you cant squeeze this florist stuff. So on second thought, It would be a crap idea to use it.

Anyways, I was happy to destroy the PW in prusuit of higher learning. The dampits need to be re-wet every 24 hrs, but my Blueridge was quite dry and the dampits have done a wonderfull job. I've seen a great improvement my guitar in the last two weeks.

I'm using the John Pearse version of the DampIt in my Ibanez. I generally moisten it once or twice a week this time of year. The instructions claim once every 7-10 days but that doesn't sound like enough. I don't own a hygrometer, I just base it on whether I can touch something made of metal without getting electrocuted, LOL.
