While that money is resting in a cd earning a little interest, I would not only play everything I could (up to about $500 list) but I would go back and read all the HCAG threads with titles like "What's the best guitar for $300"

You can get a new Yamaha, Alvarez or Washburn for $300 or less that will fit your needs.

Anything Between $200 and $300 should have a solid spruce top and laminate sides and back.

There are a lot of good, used guitars in that price range. I don't know where you live, but in my area I can find bunches of used Yamahas, Seagulls (and S&Ps), Alvarez's, Deans, Tacomas, etc. in good shape for under three bills. You may need to check out bunches of them before you find the one that sings to you, but hey - that's half the fun! :thu:

Wow, you guys sure are a friendly and helpful bunch

Sorry Sammy, that question is asked so many times on this forum and all of us have our preferences. For an "all around" $300 guitar I would start shopping pawn shops for a good old Yamaha (like mine) or a used Taylor or Marting or Larrivee - depending on what shape, size, woods and features you think you need. Of course for 300 in materials you can build something - I've only got a bit more than that in my two (and I happen to think they are the best in the world). New Washburns or Epis or Seagulls or some Guilds are mentioned a lot, a couple of people like their Carvins, a friend just sold his D10S for I think $150 (I helped him buy it a few years ago, never got around to learning to play).

so you tell us, what have you played, what did you think, what do you like?

Used is a good option at your price point. As Freeman said, a good many of us have brands we prefer. I generally recommend folks at least look at the Ibanez ArtWood series. They have a couple of models that meet your price point even new and they should be even better values used.

I think there are plenty of "good" acoustic available for your price range. I think the issue here is you asked a bunch of people who take their acoustics seriously and buy very high end gear. The word good is always relative, I'm sure there are many here playing their 1500 dollar guitar wishing they can afford a "good" 5000 Collins.

There are definately some decent stuff out there used guild GADs, I've said more then a couple times that I love the sound of my fathers Washburn D100 which cost me 150. Go to the shops and play them and try not to get hung up on the glitter. I've found in the sub 300 dollar range the ones with the most bling have it because no one would buy it based on sound.

Hey hate to be "Debby Downer" but IMO you can't get a "good" new acoustic guitar for $300. You get woods glued together to look like the basic shape of what someone could perceive as an acoustic, and it makes noise when you strum, but that noise usually isn't very good. I'd say save another $200 and get a Epiphone Masterbuilt, that you actually wouldn't regret spending money on a month from now. Just being honest.

On the other hand the "$300 worth of lotto ticks" seems like a good idea too;)

You can get a "decent" all solid wood Walden for $350.I thought it sounded just as good as a Epiphone Masterbuilt.Built about the same as well.

I have a Schecter elite acoustic/eletric guitar that I bought for about $300. Depending on what you want to play in the long run should be accounted for when selecting a guitar. I knew I wanted an acoustic/eletric because I wanted to hook it up to an amp in the future and the plug in comes in handy if you want to record on your computer. Also the oval back is great for my petite frame. And it sounds great!

There are six guitars in my house now. The guitar I play the most is an '81 Ibanez M340 I picked up for $230 from Craigslist. Blond, spruce and maple and nice to look at when I'm not playing it. I've gotten a few compliments on it from the guys at the local store where I'm taking lessons. I just love the sound too. Nothing like feeling like you got a deal. It is amazing to jump from my maple guitar to my mahogny to my rosewood. Oops, got a little thread jack going here. All I meant to say was buy used. :blah:

Here is an all solid $699 guitar for $99. Music123 is going out (I think MF bought them) and they are blowing these out. Might be worth a shot at this price?

You don't have to pay an arm and a leg for a guitar that not only sounds good but looks good. The Fullerton Brigantine is an ALL SOLID acoustic dreadnought with deluxe inlay and gold hardware. Features a solid spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides for exceptional tone. Bound abalone head stock and body set it apart from the every day budget dreadnought acoustic guitar. One strum and you'll be amazed.
