So I just put ebony bridge pins in my Alvarez AF60S and the difference is amazing. So now I want to do something about the bridge and the nutCan anyone tell me about how much on average getting a bone bridge and nut cut and installed would be??

The tone improved once I put the pins in. I chose ebony. I have some of the Martin Eric Clapton strings on it. The sound seemed to be clearer, and maybe a little brighter. My guitar is a small body but it defintitely sounded bigger once the pins were in.

Other than different strings, I believe a change to a bone saddle will be the most significant alteration. Should increase volume, sustain and may brighten the guitar a bit. I am surprised you found the ebony pins to make the tone brighter. My experience has been just the opposite.

It can be fun to experiment. I do it with strings continually with several of my guitars.

Locally (St. Louis, MO), it's $5 for the blank nut and $40 for labor. Figure (I'm guessing since I didn't get a quote on a saddle) $20 for the saddle since that's about how much they are online. To me, at least, the benefits aren't worth the cost of the nut and you'd be just as well served with a pre-slotted TUSQ nut for $10. You might as well go for the bone saddle, though.

Personally, I think strings make the biggest dif in sound. I had a bone saddle and nut put on a Fender DG20S years ago, was a bit disappointed. If you have this done by a luthier it could cost easily $80 - $100, I would go with just a saddle if that's what you want. I have everything stock on my Alvarez RD20S Dread with a pro set up, use polyweb strings, wouldn't change a thing, the top just started opening up too.

The May 2006 issue of 'Acoustic Guitar Magazine' had a do-it-yourself instructions on making your own saddle by Frank Ford.
