Installing neck strap peg on a Martin

Better left for a professional, obviously...just curious how they do it. Is it as simple as drilling the right size hole into the neck base and just fitting the peg?

I ask because I bought a Martin DM last week and it comes with the extra peg (which I def. want installed). I can't imagine if even the pro f'd up that kind of install and left a hole in the guitar... :)

Also, the action is not as good as people proclaim it to be. I changed strings to a light gauge (like I usually use) and it helped a little but it seems the neck could use a slight adjustment - anyone have issues with this model Martin and the action?

Martin sets up most of their guitars with "medium" action (translation for most of us: "High"). There's a good reason for this, though: They know each player's taste in action is different, and it is easier to reduce a saddle than to raise it without detrimental impact on tone. IMHO, every new guitar should be taken to a good tech for a setup (unless the player is sufficiently skilled and tool-equipped to do the job him/herself, and very few of us are [i am certainly not]). So take heart: the action thing is normal and not indicative of a problem with your guitar.

Re. the strap button, on a Martin it will generally be installed on the treble side of the heel. Fairly simple operation, but like most simple operations it is also fairly simple to screw it up (I'm an expert at screwing up simple things of this sort), so I'd ask the tech to do that as well. Very inexpensive job. It's probably a good idea to use some kind of fabric washer between the button and the heel to keep the button from turning loose and to prevent damaging the wood on the heel.

Congrats on your new DM! I've tried a few of them and think they're great-sounding guitars.

One caveat to watch for when installing a strap button on any guitar is to look at the manufacturer's warranty terms. On some, you void your warranty if it's not done by an authorized service center (often the dealer will be authorized service center, but not always).

Don't bother giving it to a tech.

Its the easiest job I've ever done on my guitar...easier then changing strings!

If you are really, really, really unconfident, then maybe you should indeed go to a tech, but I really think that that would be a waste of time and money.

I'd probably agree if we were only talking about the strap button. But the guy pretty clearly needs a setup. May as well just have the strap button installed at the same time.

well yeah that was kind of the point. I figured that I'd have both things done at the same time since I really don't want to damage this guitar.

Why, how much does a setup usually cost from a dealer / repair shop? I've never had any of my guitars setup in 15 years of playing (probably should have though :))

this from CF Martin's FAQ page...

I would like to have a strap button installed on my guitar. Will this void the warranty?

It will void the warranty on the neck if the strap button is not installed in the correct location of the neck or if the neck is damaged while the strap button is installed by an unauthorized repair technician. We highly recommend the strap button be installed by an authorized warranty repair person in the location recommended by the C. F. Martin Company.

a setup here in Ann Arbor at the best local shop runs $60.00

If you bought the guitar from a decent dealer the setup should be included in the price. If you bought it from GC or on line you're obviously on your own.

I actually bought the guitar used so I'm not sure the warranty still applies.

I do know a guy in town who runs a store / repair shop so I'll probably just bring it in to him. I've heard good things.
