Members Hudman Posted March 23, 2007 Members Posted March 23, 2007 Yummy. Makes me want to play. Sunbeams this time. I plan to try a set of those when I run out of my current brand (Martin SP PB's).
Members drnihili Posted March 23, 2007 Author Members Posted March 23, 2007 To my novice fingers they feel a lot like elixirs. Smooth and slick, no squeak as you move your fingers on 'em. I keep hoping one of you folks that knows what you're talking about will try some GHS Infinity and tell me what you think. I really enjoyed 'em, but I don't have much to compare. Hmmm, I wonder if I sent a set to FK if he'd test 'em.......
Members T0MCAT Posted March 23, 2007 Members Posted March 23, 2007 Anyone order strings online? It seems they may be cheaper that way (well, shipping may screw that up), and the selection should be great, I would think.
Members drnihili Posted March 23, 2007 Author Members Posted March 23, 2007 Ebay. Here's where I got my Sunbeams. Can't argue about the price. Got my GHS on Ebay too, though a different vendor. http://stores.ebay.com/Quality-Cables-Plus_DR-STRINGS-all-types_Acoustic_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ2041260QQftidZ2QQpZ2QQtZkm

Members BuckyB Posted March 23, 2007 Members Posted March 23, 2007 WebStrings.com I like their electrics, haven't tried their acoustic yet, but plan to soon.
Members Dave W. Posted March 23, 2007 Members Posted March 23, 2007 Sunbeams, my favorite, though they are not a coated string. I use juststrings.com and they have been great. Only a couple of hundred miles away, so I get pretty quick delivery times, and they have everything you can think of. I think internet companies like these have to be good. Stories of poor service get around the forums fast.
Members drnihili Posted March 23, 2007 Author Members Posted March 23, 2007 Sunbeams, my favorite, though they are not a coated string. What makes them feel so slick? I don't have a lot of experience, but the feel just like elixirs to me. They're slicker than the D'addario EXPs that I just took off, which in turn were tons slicker than the GHS Infinity that I used before that. Slickness isn't a bad thing, just different. The tone on these is much less sensitive to the details of how i fret and pluck. Given my level of skill (very low) that's probably a good thing.....
Members Freeman Keller Posted March 23, 2007 Members Posted March 23, 2007 but the feel just like elixirs to me. ..... Not to me. Still on the 000-28, long term test in progress. At some point I'll try the extended life DR's
Members drnihili Posted March 23, 2007 Author Members Posted March 23, 2007 Not to me. Still on the 000-28, long term test in progress. At some point I'll try the extended life DR's Hmmmm, wonder if I got the wrong ones.... Box says "Sunbeams", doesn't say extended life, but the little envelopes say "Corrosion Protection by Cortec". It's mainly the unwound strings that feel slick to me. The wound ones aren't as slick as elixirs though they are slicker than GHS. Do you get any finger squeak on the Sunbeams FK?
Members Dave W. Posted March 23, 2007 Members Posted March 23, 2007 Cortec is an anti corrosion agent added to the envelope paper. The DR strings that are coated are called "Extras". I suppose it is possible a set of Extras got into a Sunbeam box.
Members Freeman Keller Posted March 23, 2007 Members Posted March 23, 2007 Do you get any finger squeak on the Sunbeams FK? I actually did a squeak test on the Great String Test for every example (a slide from 2 to 7 on the 5th string). Judge for yourself.
Members drnihili Posted March 23, 2007 Author Members Posted March 23, 2007 I'll go have a listen to that part. Though if you're getting any squeak at all on the plain strings, then I've got the wrong ones.
Members drnihili Posted March 23, 2007 Author Members Posted March 23, 2007 Sounds like you're getting a bit more than I am. It's hard to tell on the wound string how much of that is from the stickiness of the strings and how much is from the bumpiness of the windings. Next time you play that git, could you just run your finger up and down one of the plain strings and tell me if it squeaks? I get zero squeak on the plain strings. Again, I don't see this as a bad thing at all, just not what I was expecting.
Members Freeman Keller Posted March 23, 2007 Members Posted March 23, 2007 OK, the triple ought has DR's, I'll try tonight. Normally string noise on the unwound strings doesn't bother me at all regardless of brand. And, of course, most "coated" strings don't have anything on the first two (the new rust proof Elixers do).

Easy way to tell is if you still have the ends you cut off, or there is enough left on the tuning machine that you could cut a little piece off. Unwind the wrap and look at the core wire under a magnifying glass. DR does not make a round core acoustic coated (Extra) string, so if the core is round, and the wrap is PB, it is a Sunbeam. DR sells a wipe on produce called String Life, which will reduce squeak, but you are not going to find it on a new set of strings.

The DR Extras have coating on the plain strings, one of the things that turned me off about them, besides not being available in round core. Mark told me that the Sunbeams are not quite as bright as the Rares, and he does not want to dull them further by addind the coating.
