Members g6120 Posted March 22, 2007 Members Posted March 22, 2007 In response to some good folks on this forum who feel I don't participate and only post "look at me" posts and run: I joined the forum in 8/06 and while the majority of my posts have been intending to share my music in order to gain valuable feedback I have also participated and helped out in many other ways. But, even though I can play the hell out of Neil Young and fairly well mimick is vocal "talents", it's not something I would bank my talents on. No offense intended at all - I'm just not a Neil Young fan in the face of all other people of that era - but please don't use the only forum I visit and gag me with him. Fair enough? Good.

I opened five or six of these posts at random, and in literally every single one of them I found a link to one of your vids... which frankly suggests to me that any ostensible interest you may have in the people in this forum is entirely incidental to our greater purpose, which would seem to be watching your vids. Whether that is right or wrong, it's the perception engendered - among some of us - by such posting habits. Being one of the forumites who, along with Stack, have been a little critical of what I perceive to be an egregious imbalance between your interest in the people on this forum and your interest in our attention, I have had occasion to consider that rather than continuing to be critical, I should perhaps take the advice I've imparted to other forumites who've expressed distaste over others' [for whatever perceived reason] objectionable posting habits: STFU and change the channel. I think that's what I will need to do. But since you've broached the subject, I will say that I think you would find us an infinitely more broadly interested and accepting and friendly bunch if you might carve out sufficient time to get to know your fan base a little - many of whom are themselves rather busy people (no, it's true). The tricky part is that doing this would require an actual interest in the individuals comprising said fan base... Enjoy.

I figured you had a life outside of HC and judging from the sheer number of videos you've posted that your free time is being better spent on your playing ventures. I can certainly relate to your time situation. With a 3 year-old boy just starting in preschool and the recent arrival another son I myself have been trying to reduce my participation and get more playing time in. Sorry if my brief tongue in cheek post in that other thread (re: the "look at me" comment mentioned above) ruffled your feathers. I've been under a little more stress lately and should have known better. I hope there are no hard feelings.

There are tons of people who lurk and never say anything at all, shall we run them off the forum too? Frankly I've gotten stuff from his postings. E.g. figuring out some chords that were incorrect on the sheet I had but which he played correctly. We even had a brief exchange about it. And as I recall he spent some time going over his recording set up. That said, yes I'd love to hear more words from g6120. I suspect I could learn a thing or two. But it's up to him how he posts, just like it is for the rest of us.

My post wasn't just in response to this thread, but also comments I've seen in other threads. Often the tone taken is more accusatory than inviting. That someone feels the need to post a list of their participation speaks volumes. This is generally a welcoming and friendly place. Occasionally it isn't. I think this has been one of those times. At least that's how it has looked from my chair.

But apparently you and I are not reading the same thing in those volumes. I do think I understand how it looks to you and I'm sorry for that. For my part, I certainly have no desire to be unfriendly, etc. I'm just not seeing things as you are, and I don't think the tone you're picking up (I wouldn't say it's accusatory, but it's certainly negative) is particularly mysterious. Still, as I indicated in my first post in this thread, I'll keep my thoughts to myself where the gent's future vid posts are concerned. Best I can do - and probably should have done to begin with. I've no desire to argue with you or anyone else in here. Sincere apologies if that's how I'm coming across - argumentative. Time for me to shut up.

And, I can list all my contributions to this forum and take an inventory to separate valid contributions from total crap. That's not the point here. G6120 is largely evasive of the purpose of this forum and rather uses it strictly for his own purposes. Yea, he does make token contributions but not without hawking himself. Obviously, he thinks highly of his work/progress and we all want to give each other kudos for keeping the faith. But, none of us solicit forum members as he does in such a blatant, or possibly oblivious, self-serving manner. I realize I needn't respond to his threads about himself, rather than on behalf of this forum, so silence is largely my MO. But, damn, he's all take and no give. We all have a breaking point where we say something and it's time - the king is naked and has been exposed. Instead of simply acknowledging that, yea, maybe he could be a touch more altruistic and cooperative to this forum, he strikes up a defensive posture and lists a bunch of threads hoping the weight of such evidence will convince us he isn't just here for himself. And, there is no such evidence spoken, much less volumes, supporting his claim. Then he throws the family at us, like none of us have families and other real-world responsibilities. Gag me with a spoon, mon. Okay. Nobody likes being called out onto the carpet but in light of his participation here I have to say that his curiosity is largely focused upon himself - self-serving - and his posts are geared that way. Finally, I wouldn't have the stones to gum-shoe my stuff here, to be brutally honest, in the manner he does. Occasionally, yes I would like some feed-back and I do post my stuff. But, even I have some notion of unspoken courtesies about hawking myself.

As stated before, I wish Gill spent more time posting here. It seems like his computer time is divided between video editing and running his MySpace and You Tube pages. Now we discover he has 2 little kids. No wonder he doesn't have time to post here. Hell, I can't find the time to make audio recordings. I think his intentions are good. It may take a while for him to get the feel of this place.

I don't agree with drnihili's opinion of you, but I give you serious credit for taking it the way you did. Most people would have lost their cool. Contrary to drnihili's opinion, you do contribute to this forum on a large scale. You have done a lot behind the scenes for numerous people here (including me). I admire the fact that you do it without the desire to get credit for it. You are a class act. For those that don't know, cripes used to be sweb. His sweb password stopped working after one of the endless forum "upgrades".

What I'm trying to say here is I don't care what the man posts as long as he's civil and doesn't have XXX stuff in his avatar or signature. To be brutally honest, (sorry Gil) I only listened to one of his video's and like somebody already said, I ain't interested in what the man's got. He's not HIDING what he's posting to suck anybody in or peddling child porno after all. Small point, when I asked him what his recording technique was, he answered in detail and I learned a bunch about video tracking. Soooooooo. Maybe if you see a post with a song title in the subject and g6120 in the thread starter field give it a pass? I hope we aren't getting anal here. If you really want, I can write a 2500 character post on the psychology of groups. That'll be fun. Give him a break. Beyond treating each other with respect, no one owes anyone else a thing, least of all some highly subjective level of altruistic participation. As a beginning guitarist, each time someone on this forum posts a link to a file or vid of themselves playing the guitar, I'm inspired to practice more. It's never occured to me to wonder if the poster was tootin' his own horn. I don't care.

For those that don't know, cripes used to be sweb. His sweb password stopped working after one of the endless forum "upgrades". You may be hearing my view of Cripes far more critically than I intended. I think he's a great influence on the forum. There's a group of you that do a lot to make this place feel convivial and friendly and not too stuck up. Recorder porn and all that helps a lot. I do think that FK is the paragon of someone who goes out of his way to be helpful, and that there aren't many who match him in that. But I certainly don't think that makes anyone who doesn't a bad forum member. As for what goes on behind the scenes, I have no idea. But then nobody knows what g6120 may do behind the scenes. I wasn't trying to put down Cripes' role on the forums, I actually quite like him. My point was that we don't all have to fit the same mold. g6120 makes a positive contribution to the forum. It is not the same contribution that Cripes or anyone else makes, but it is a contribution. I'd love to have g6120 contribute more and in different ways, but I don't think he's doing anything wrong or suspect in the way he contributes now.

That said, it would appear that he's trying to be the master youtube neil young guy... i suppose if he were doing the same thing on multiple forums (HC or otherwise) i could probably have a problem with it... But i have no way of knowing if he's doing that or not. posting your 'posting credentials' is not necessary, nor indicative.

We talk about gear mostly but if someone wants to link to his youtube and or mp3 recordings I don't see a problem with it. As long of course as they are roughly in scope of this forum. (No videos of someone doing the funky chicken dance on a bar top). I have posted some one my recording here and got some much appreciated feedback. It's rewarding to hear other musicians responses to my work. Granted like everything in life moderation is golden. If someone posted a link every damn day to their stuff then I would be the first in line to vote to boot them but this doesn't seem the case.
