Hello guys,

I have been visiting this part of the forum from time to time searching for info on acoustic guitars.

Anyway, I need a 6 string acoustic electric guitar.

Budget? $1000 - $1500 (around there)

Sound im looking for? Im not sure how to describe it, but here are some acoustic guitar tones I really like:

Let me know what kind of guitar I should be looking for! Give me some models and type of wood.

Dunno if you've bought one yet, but looking at the Pink Floyd video it looks like Dave G is using a Gibson for the lead work. On the original the rhythm is done by a 12 string (as on the video) and the lead work on a Martin D28 (I think). But since you are talking 1000-1500...

Don't forget that it is live as well: so maybe a solid body Taylor with ES system or my personal non-Taylor favourite, the B-Band system.

Often a performer's website will have some information about what kind of gear they use - every time there is an interview in AG magazine they have a little sidebar entitled "what she plays". That would be a good way to find out the make and model of gits they use. I took a quick look at the vids and it looks like the Staind ones he is playing an OM sized, looks to be rosewood, and I can't tell what the headstock is, but pretty sure it is not a Martin. I don't see a pickguard (or it is a clear one) so really, I don't have a clue. I don't have speakers on this computer so I can't listen, but frankly, it is pretty hard to pick out the amplified and effected sound of a plugged in A/E guitar.

Also realize that good performers can do things with their guitars that I (and maybe you) will never get close to. My triple ought is very similar to Claptons - do I sound like EC, hell no. I've played a Kottke sig 12 string - do I sound like Leo? LOL.

So, in your price range there are a lot of really good A/E guitars - Taylor's in the 3xx and 4xx (whatever then new numbers are), many folks here like their Masterbuilts (a Gibbie clone), and I was pretty inpressed with a Carvin 980 for under a grand. You can also add your own electronics if you find something.

try absolutely everything - dont be biased by the brand just yet - you may find you pick up something cool you'd never have considered

And don't be afraid to buy something for less than you expected to play, there are some nice sounding guitars out there at a nice price. I went in with 1000 dollar limit, and me being very picky, and walked out with a guitar costing 100 dollars on clearance (so a 200 guitar) that I like a lot, and play a lot. Of course that left me 900 bones that was burning fat hole in pocket to spend on an acoustic and you know damned well that exactly what I did! I dropped another 600 or so on another guitar, case, strings, tuner, stand and some books!

first go to a guitar center, or other same type store near you and try them all...you'll probably end up liking the Guild d40's or 25's, gibson jumbos, martin d45's and taylors...then, with your eyes closed play an Ibanez artwood...you'll be shocked and end up buying the Ibanez.

The more guitars you check out and play the happier you will be - id also visit as many places as you can , you might find something unexpected when you least looking for it - a nice surprise !

Those clips featured several different guitars (including a 12 string on Wish You Were Here).

They also featured different tones.

For the record: David Gilmour could make a Walmart guitar sound awesome. ;)

The most popular body shape is the dread. The two most popular wood combinations are spruce / rosewood and spruce / mahogany.

There are too many factors for us to tell you which guitar you should buy: Body shape / size, nut width, neck profile / size, wood and bracing pattern. The other factor is your playing style: fingerstyle, flat picker, strummer, etc.

Many acoustic guitar players own more than one type of guitar. I have a dread (spruce / rosewood), an OM (spruce / mahogany) and a jumbo (spruce / laminate maple). My favorite is the OM (Larrivee OM-03).

It's hard to go wrong with a Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Guild or Larrivee.

Get out and start playing some guitars. Remember, a good acoustic should sound awesome unplugged. Forget about effects and amplifiers. The acoustic is a different animal than the electric.

Personally, I would consider buying 2 guitars if I had a $1500 budget to work with.

Good luck. :thu:

Me too. I'd get two Epi Masterbilts for $1500. I'd start my collection.

A DR-500R would be next and there's a Masterbilt banjo I've been dying to check out.
