Lo and behold, a trip to the store brings GAS

Just got back from a trip to the local mom and pop store. Played some of those Waldens for the first time and they're pretty great. Still like my Epi better, but for the most part I was impressed. Played an Epi Masterbilt AJ-500R. Awesome, no surprises there. Played a maple back and sides Seagull, that had pretty cool tone.

One big find: a thinline acoustic upright bass for $400! Played great! Man I might just have to go back and get that one.

One big big find: a late 60s Guild twelve! I'm not sure if it was this one...

... but that's pretty close. The neck felt great and it was perfectly set up. I pretty much fell in love. I think it was about $800. Is that a good price? There was some pretty significant scratching on the top, the bridge pins were all chewed up, and the tuners were kinda not so good but everything was original. If I miraculously came up with $800 tomorrow, I'd see how far down I could haggle it and then use the money I'd saved to buy new tuners and some brass pins. I'm worried about passing this one up! I hope no one buys it for a while, so I can get a chance to come up with some money.

So that's my story. It got me pretty excited, but no one in my family thought it was that big of a deal, so I thought I'd tell you.

I played some Waldins the other day too, I dug them. They had a D610, for 350 plus a hard case, nice deal. I wouldn't mind one of those.

I also have a GAS flair up, Just went to GC to check out the Masterbilt EF500, I like it, I want it.

You just Had to post a Guild 12 string, eh? I just purchased a D-55 after going back and forth for a week on whether I would play it regularly or not. Ellen, with your musical background, I think it would get played since you could probably deal with the twelve tuning pegs easier than I. I'd say that thing would end up in your car if you offered him 5 one hundred dollar bills, or maybe start at $450 and tell him you want to upgrade all the pins/tuners. I acted just slightly interested in my Guild until I got an out the door price cheaper than the cheapest internet sale I saw. I may go back some day and get the 12 too, especially if you keep talkin' about it! :^)

Ellen, a friend just bought a Guild twelve that looks just like that pic. I could call him (not until monday tho) and find out what it is and what he paid. You might also try PM'ng Terry - he has a couple of Guild 12's.

It would look really good on you. (and I happen to think it is a big deal, regardless of what your family thinks)

Haha thanks Freeman. I believe I have $500, but its basically my life's savings. :D I can't work right now because its softball season and on the weekends I have double headers, so there's no cash flow in unless I have a session soon (which is unlikely since I tell most folks I can't work much in April/May).

I may have to let this one go for now (:(), unless I can borrow some money (my mom will be hearing about this) and then pay it back once softball's over and I'm working at GC.

And that bass! I can't decide what I want more. An upright bass or a twelve string... ahhhh GAS stinks.

Does anyone remember when $500.00 was their "life savings" and blew it anyway on something they just had to have - you name it - when we were Ellen's age? *Flashes back to 1973 about buying a Martin D-35 for $735.00 and didn't have a 2 nickels to rub together after that*

Also, my bro bought a Guild F-412 for $800.00 in 1974. That Guild you are looking at better be pristine for that price. I ended up with his F-412 and it was in about the shape as the one you describe. I gave it away (hey, I get weird like that sometimes) rather than put money back into it. So, again, whittle the price on the one you're looking at way down. Offer the owner $500.00 tax, tag and title. Get a can of "money smell" and spray your coat with it before you talk with him.

Ellen, whether or not you get that particular guitar is really of no consequence (even though it feels like it is.) You are young and talented and you will own and sell a whole lot of guitars in your life. A 12 string from the '60s will likely need more money put into it, and soon. If you can't afford it now you will be able to buy one at least as good when you are ready. Remember, the quality of guitars is improving and the prices are coming down.
