Members JD1 Posted March 26, 2007 Members Posted March 26, 2007 I apologize if this has already been discussed - I did a search and couldn't find a definition of wings in regards to the neck. What exactly is it?Why is it bad?How can I tell if my acoustic has it? Thanks in advance.
Members JasmineTea Posted March 26, 2007 Members Posted March 26, 2007 Wings=not bad. The little pieces of wood attached to the sides of the head are wings. Martin does it to save wood.
Members Queequeg Posted March 26, 2007 Members Posted March 26, 2007 my 1999 taylor has them, too, but does not have the fingerjoint head/neck joint which I think they started the following year.
Members Freeman Keller Posted March 26, 2007 Members Posted March 26, 2007 JT is right on. The Martin purests are up in arms because that isn't the way it was done in the Golden Era, and there have been a couple of reported cases of wings breaking off (probably shouldn't drop a guitar on its head). Martin is trying hard to conserve scarce resources, as is Taylor with their finger and scarf joints. Absolutely nothing wrong with this in my book. btw - there have been several long threads on the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum about wings if you care to do a search.
