Members kwakatak Posted March 30, 2007 Members Posted March 30, 2007 You guys wanna be Elvis or sumthin'? Seriously, though. At one time I had GAS for a big blond jumbo but after playing a few models in the $600 range I decided that they just weren't for me. OTOH, I still have this fascination about finding a flamed maple 12 string jumbo but that's waaaay down near the bottom of my GAS list right down there with a semi-hollow ash Tele. So what's the deal? You guys looking to bulk up your stables or are you looking for another all-in-one guitar? I could certainly understand either point of view but I think I've got this GAS thing under control for now.
Members Freeman Keller Posted March 30, 2007 Members Posted March 30, 2007 Since you mentioned 12 string jumbos, the chatter over at the ex-Taylor forum is that Taylor has dropped the jumbo size from their 12 string lines (except for the old LKSM, which is kind of a special critter). I just always felt that the J was the best size for a 12, but old Bob must think otherwise. I've always thought this was one of the loveliest 12 strings Except for those weird little pins Cumpiano used to use for his neck joints.
Members knockwood Posted March 30, 2007 Members Posted March 30, 2007 I like me a bigass git. I learned to play on a dread. At some point I started coveting OM/000 size gits. Got a couple. But I've never really been able to get physically comfortable with them. I need me a giant box. Hadn't really had much playing time with jumbos until fairly recently - tried out a Lowden O a while back & from that point I've been very interested in the J size. I always play sitting down (except for those weird moments when I am impelled to strap up and play in front of a window/mirror, but that isn't important right now because it's another thread for another kind of forum... ), and I find jumbos pretty freakin' comfy on the lap. A nice bigass 17" lower bout rumble doesn't hurt either.
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted March 30, 2007 Members Posted March 30, 2007 Been exclusively a jumbo guy since 1977...that's when I disciovered that a guitar w/ a 17" lower bout and a tight waist is the perfect guitar...
Members AndrewGG Posted March 30, 2007 Members Posted March 30, 2007 I love jumbos and super jumbos; they got me off the typical, square shoulder dread habit and introduced me to a world of big tone, balance and projection-not to mention versatility and great looks! ______________ Gibson SJ 200Gibson J 185 Koa CustomGibson Advanced JumboMartin OOOO-36 Custom
Members babablowfish Posted March 30, 2007 Members Posted March 30, 2007 I bought my Parkwood Jumbo because it sounded and looked so great. To tell the truth, I am blissfully unaware of any specific benefits of Dreads vs Jumbos etc. When I play the Parkwood, it really doesn't feel any different from when I play my dreads either - or rather it probably does, but I really haven't noticed.

Plus, playing a Jumbo makes you look 17.874% cooler than a dreadnaught player!

Members kwakatak Posted March 30, 2007 Author Members Posted March 30, 2007 Fair enough, but when I look at a Gibson J-200 I usually think of this: http://www.shopelvis.com/nshop/product.php?navgroup=0&view=detail&productid=EP-175921-S&dept=photoprints&category=photoprints&page=&groupName=PHOTOprint11x14 ... but those of you guys who seem to personify your guitars as women, I think the upswing in blond jumbos may have a lot to do with the supersaturation of Anna Nicole news going on.
Members theGOOCH Posted March 30, 2007 Members Posted March 30, 2007 L.A. face with an Oakland booty....

Members Hudman Posted March 30, 2007 Members Posted March 30, 2007 Jumbo's are cool. They produce a nice balance of bass and treble. The mids are less complex than an OM, but the high notes sound brighter and more defined than a dread (IMO). They are exceptional guitars for dynamics.

Getting a biggish chunk of your playing time?
Members Hudman Posted March 30, 2007 Members Posted March 30, 2007 How's your new jumbo working out? Getting a biggish chunk of your playing time? Yeah, I played it pretty much exclusively for the first 3 weeks I owned it. I leave it hanging on the wall. I end up playing it a lot because it's always out. I keep the Larrivee in the case. My Epi is out on loan to a buddy. I don't miss it because the jumbo covers a lot of ground. I broke out the Larrivee last weekend and installed a bone saddle and ebony bridge pins. It got a lot of play this week. The jumbo is nice, but the OM sparkles with it's well defined mids.

Are you neglecting that Larri, Hud? I'd hate to see you leave the fold again. I was getting a little bored with mine and took to strumming on my Tak. I still like to look at the OM though and the spruce top and mahogany neck have gotten noticeably darker. Then I noticed that the John Pearse strings I put on about a month ago had no visible luster, so I took 'em off. I put on Martin SP Fingerstyles PB's and the boredom left because the tone came back, baby. It took a little while and several different brands (Elixir, John Pearse, Ernie Ball and Newtone Masterclass strings) but I think I've found my "go-to" string with this guitar. The best thing about it is that they only cost $6.50 a set if I buy 'em online from juststrings.com. As for the jumbo thing, I'll probably never own one. If I did, it'd probably be the same model you have but in a 12.

I saw you jumbo thread over at the Larrivee Forum and wondered if you were getting second thoughts about that D-60. When's it coming? BTW - I hear the SD-50 is something pretty special. Have you ever tried one?
Members J. Posted March 31, 2007 Members Posted March 31, 2007 They need to make a 12-fret jumbo. I see 12 fret dreads, but I've yet to see a jumbo in that configuration. A question: do they make jumbos without the skinny waist? I'm thinking more of a dread profile but just... bigger.

When's it coming? BTW - I hear the SD-50 is something pretty special. Have you ever tried one? Definitely no second thoughts. No anxiety, no buyer's remorse (price is fantastic), etc. And trusting the seller is a massive plus. I can't wait to get my hands on this thing. Originally it was going to be a 3 - 4 week wait; Notable was out of stock. But Jason told me last night that Larri has already shipped him the git... Shouldn't be much longer. So the jumbo thing... I'd decided recently that I'm a larger git kind of guy. They're just more comfortable for me, physically, and I dig boom. And in wanting to scale down the number of gits in my stable, I'd settled on two as the appropriate number. I got kind of thrown for a loop by the eBay deal - seemed too good to pass up. Prior to that, for my magic "two," I'd been thinking what makes the most sense for me is a nice big rose dread with a 1-11/16" nut and a second git in hog or maple or walnut or something interesting, with a 1-3/4" nut for a fingerstyler. So now that I got hosed on eBay and I'm back on track, I'm excited as hell about the D-60. Git #2 will be for next year or the year after. All my git money for this year is bye-bye. I've never tried a Larri SD. I've heard nothing but raves, and the few sound clips I've heard sound very sweet.
Members kwakatak Posted March 31, 2007 Author Members Posted March 31, 2007 Damn, you guys and all your guitar comings and goings have got me feeling a little left out. I really need to unload that decrepit old pointy electric of mine, get back to that shop with the L-03, or that other shop with the HD-35 and move some merchandise. Of course, I could just go and make it worse and request Notable's price list again. I'm still drooling over the one I got over a year ago.
