What's an advantage of owning a resonator guitar?

I'm trying to fiqure what advantage I would in owning one over a decent solid wood guitar.Durability, maybe a louder sound? Cool looks? Sounds really cool with slide? I don't think I need another solid wood guitar at this time, and I want and intend to buy one in a week or so.Anyone that has one, what's a advantage or a good reason for owning one? Every time I go into a music store I want something different!

Back problems especially from an all metal body 12 fret if you don't know how to balance it.

I don't plan on getting a steel one. Those are some heavy mutha's!

Resonators have certain tonal qualities that, while maybe not advantages, necessarily, are unobtainable with acoustic instruments. If you like that tone, get one. If not, pass.

I have a single cone bell brass resonator and I am very happy with it. I consider it a beautiful sounding guitar for both slide, and fingerstyle play. But, remember, there are large tonal differences between a single cone, a tricone and a wood body single cone. Have fun choosing!

The one I have played I really liked the tone quality of it.It had a lot more tone than a regular acousic, and it was quite a bit louder also.I won't be using it for slide 100% of the time, but will tune to Open G quite often.I believe the one I want is a double cone. What's the difference in them?

There are a few variations, and I am no expert. However, many feel that for pure slide playing, a metal bodied tricone is the way to go as it is smoother, rounder and has a bit more sustain but less volume. A single cone is great for fingerpicking, as it is bright, crunchy and loud. The wood bodies can be either configuration and follow the same principles but are much warmer. I was very impressed with a 12 string Koa resonator from National.

I use my single cone for everything because that's the only reso I have. If I had a tricone, I would use it for everything, as well.

The only thing I don't like about resonators is the metal thing over the bridge that makes you need a different, and less capable, technique for muting the strings. I don't know what it's called. Next one I get I will ask the factory to take it off, or do it myself.

Kat, that was the woodie in open G. It has a sweet sad sound, typical of old spiders. The brass one is a load obnoxious nasty thing - it make dogs howl and cats hide. Its heavy as hell, blinds people in the front row and is just too much fun.

A couple of years ago there was a lot of interest in reso's so I wrote up a little document called Resonators 101 - explains the basics (number of cones (one or three, not two), types of saddles, construction, tunings, etc. Pretty basic but it also has a lot of good links to other materials. If you want a copy, PM me your e-mail addy (I can't attach it to a PM) and I'll shoot you a copy on monday (its on a different PC).

Let me warn you, these things are addictive and fun

I pretty much know the one I want. I've been play some older music here lately, like The Carter Family tunes. They're simple and easy, and they sound good as well.I'm thinking a resonator and madolin could really make them really good tunes! When I have the money on hand,I'll play all the ones I can in my price range,so far I'm stuck on the Regals. Thanks.

The main advantage of resonators is their reported ability to stop small calibre bullets - a distinct PLUS in some venues!

I've been playing a single cone for many years - I love their honky tone. That's their other advantage, they just don't sound like any other guitars. You hear people on this site debating whether they need a 000 or a jumbo etc. to complement their dreads. However, the casual listener would be hard pressed to hear any difference - but a resonator sounds like nothing else.

Oh -and MBWendel - the bridge guard is their for good reason, it allows the cone to vibrate (important) and protects it from damage (more important). My advice would be leave it on.

Hi there Freeman, I was just wondering if you could send me a copy of your guide to Resonators as well.

I'm looking into buying one at the moment and need to do a little research.

The only two I've seen so far are a Martinez MMRG-1-NCS and a Regal RC-2 Duolian (both steel-bodied, single cone biscuit). Not sure whether either are any good as I haven't tried one yet.

As I'm still at the intermediate stage I didnt want to spend too much to start with and these around the 800 Australian Dollar mark

My first post and I'm asking for favours already.....!

Thanks

Hi, John, and welcome to HC. Favours is what we're good for . I need your e-mail address and it is a bad idea to put it in a forum post (the Spam bots will grab it and start sending you all kinds of stuff you don't want). If you click on my name in one of the previous posts it will give you the option of sending me a Personal Message ("PM"). Put your address in that and I'll send you a copy.

Warning, you'll be doomed to having a ton of fun and your neighbors will hate you.
