Jim http://www.americanmusical.com/item--i-TAY-214.html  Hmm is 700 too much for Laminate back and side guitars though? When you can get something like the Guild GAD50 that's solid throughout for a little less?
Members gibson185 Posted April 2, 2007 Members Posted April 2, 2007 While I am sure it is nice, it is still a step down, IMHO, from the solid wood 200 series. While solid rosewood may be better than solid sapele, solid sapele is better than laminate rosewood.

Enough to make a laminate sound better then a solid wood guitar? Be interesting to hear them side by side.. If anyone wants to ship both to me I'ld gladly take the time to do a Freemanstyle sound test.

LOL It would also be interesting to compare the old 214 (solid sapele, I think) with the new one (laminated rose). And does anyone know if the new ones are still 1-11/16 necks?

When you can get something like the Guild GAD50 that's solid throughout for a little less? I have a feeling that the used prices will be a little more realistic. I used to see used solid sapele 214s going for $500. I wouldn't pay much more than that for a new guitar with laminated back & sides, regardless of where it was made or what name was on the headstock.

It's actually a dead-ringer for my 414 (except mine has a cutaway); I have a Limited that has rosewood back and sides (albeit solid) instead of the usual ovangkol. The 214 looks sweet, and I'm a fan of Taylor quality, but I have to balk at $700 for a laminate guitar, given all the other solid wood options available.

Me too. Seems a little ridiculous with all-solid Epi Masterbilts floating around for far less than $700. However, I've never played the new 214s so I'll have to check them out next time at GC. Ellen
Members guit30 Posted April 3, 2007 Author Members Posted April 3, 2007 Why is it people have no problem paying 5 to 6 hundred dollars for the Martin DX1R and others without case? Yes, I would much rather have an American made Auditorium size guitar than a Guild GAD dread made in a Chinese factory. I have had too many problems with Chinese guitars. I believe guitars made in the USA are better, but that is just me. I haven't played any Masterbilts but 1 and I didn't like the V neck, otherwise it was very nice. This is a personal preference, I would love to have an American made auditorium sized Taylor with Great fretwork and a nice ebony neck. To me, the 100 series have excellent sound quality, on the other hand, if I could get a deal where I could get one of the solid wood sapele leftovers for around $600, I would do that 1st. Jim

Members DonK Posted April 3, 2007 Members Posted April 3, 2007 How's your new Johnson 000? Jim:wave: Sad, but I've been so busy I haven't been able to get to my office to snag it; it's been sitting there since Friday. I'm going there tomorrow to get it.
Members missedmyexit Posted April 3, 2007 Members Posted April 3, 2007 Missed My Exit- when your done your test -send me the laminateThanksJim LOL Seems perfectly fair to me.. Now if someone will just send me both guitars, I'll do my test and send the Taylor off to you. I'll have to keep the Guild around though for long term testing.
