Advice on buying a jumbo.

I've always wanted a jumbo acoustic. I have a Dean Exotica that I like, but I don't know if it is considered jumbo. When I think of jumbo I think of Gibson, but my budget will not allow it at this time. My next choice is an Epiphone EJ, but I know brands like Durango make cheaper jumbos. So I guess I'm just wanting some advice. I'd like to stay fairly cheap.

Hudman has one of these:

I've played one. Awesome for the bucks.

Dan is correct.

I bought my Washburn Cumberland used. It was a bit under $400 with shipping. I like it a lot.

I consider going with an Alvarez AJ60S. You can buy them new for $429 or around $300 used.

Well, they don't get much cheaper than this:

$100 brand new with free shipping on close-out. Also comes in 12-string for the same price.

For $100, can't be all bad. I believe it's real wood. You might call them and ask'em. Either way, you have 45 days to decide if you want to keep it.

I just bought an old Yamaha CJ838s: Solid spruce top, rosewood back and sides. Fantastic sound. Warm and sweet. Block inlays!!! Paid just over $300. What a deal.

For some reason, many jumbos are maple back/sides. Generally, I don't care for that sound--although many disagree. Go play anything you can get your hands on before you buy.

This may be more than you want to spend but I've wanted a jumbo for a quite a while and finally decided on this one...

Washburn Cumberland Custom

I can't put this thing down. Supposedly only 48 of these custom ones made. Musicians Friend has them for $749 WITHOUT the Pearl Vine of Life inlay. I ordered it on Ebay 2 Sundays ago. It came to my door 2 days later that following Tuesday morning. Everything about this guitar I love and the wife has noticed the improved sound too. Even the case was better than I expected.

I bought a used Washburn Cumberland J28SDL two weeks ago. I'm really happy with it.

Ok, well it's maybe not the jumbo I always wanted, but I just bought one of the Fullerton Jumbos. I just had too hard of a time passing 99 bucks up. I'll let you guys know what it's like when I get it.

That is one beautiful looking guitar. Love the quilted maple. :thu:

Damn you people!!! I told the woman I wouldn't be buying anymore guitars and now I went and ordered the 12 string Jumbo... It's 99 dollars! For a Jumbo Acoustic.. Can they be that bad? I hold all of you responsible for the end of my relationship and possibly my life. On the bright side if I live through it, I will have a new 12 string to review for your reading pleasure.

***UPDATE***

I might not being getting killed after all my birthday is this month and just called my sister and told her that she is going to be taking credit for buying the guitar. ahhhh victory..

Sledgehammer your killing me.I read the reviews here and elsewhere on the Guild GAD's,Epi Masterbuilt's,Packwoods, etc and planned to try them at GC tomorrow but that thing looks killer.Though more than I wanted to spend with all those features and return policy I might just bite the bullet and buy without trying it beforehand.

I cannot believe I followed that link to the listing and listened to the recorded presentation and drooled over the pictures. My pulse and blood pressure went up and my hands shook. I just bought a Parkwood Jumbo in December for God's sake!! What is really scary is that I am going to be in OK City next week on business and can just see myself taking a cab to their store.

You bastard!!

I'm sure people are getting sick of me going on about how much I like my Washburn Cumberland (no cutawy - no electronics - model J28SDL). I bought mine used. The neck feels great. The action was nearly perfect striaght out of the shipping box. A 1/8 - 1/4 turn of the truss rod counter clockwise made it perfect. I have no intention of swapping the saddle, nut or bridge pins because I am very happy with the stock tone. The stock Grover 18:1 tuners are some of the best I ever used. The guitar stays in tune really well. Over all, I am very happy with it.

The standard model J28SCEDL (no vine inlay) is being sold at Musicians Friend and at Music123 no longer has the Buzz Feiten intonation system (I think Washburn stopped using it). It's also being sold for $70 more at MF than the deluxe model on Ebay.

I have a more expensive Avalon L32C... rosewood sides/back jumbo.

There are some other Avalons NEW on eBay that are being sold well below market. Check them out. The L series always means jumbo. Avalon used to be the same company as Lowden, but split several years ago. Fantastic guitars! Strings and wood in magical balance.

Check them out... everyone. It's called "Everything Music 4 Less" eBay store.

The three Jumbos are a little more budget priced, and believe me, these as amazingly, perturbingly priced hand-made in Northern Ireland guitars. IN a whole different league than the discussion so far... my opinion. All solid woods in every guitar except the Silver series (as labeled)
