GAS: Guild D4NT vs. Guild GAD 50

Any thoughts on the tonal differences here?

Here's why I am curious: I currently have a D4NT as my beater but I have found a GAD 50 that I really like, problem is that it's on ebay so I will be buying without playing/hearing it. My main guitar is a Gibson Advanced Jumbo so I'm looking for that deep booming bass. When I bought the d4nt, I played it first and really loved the tone - although it is laminate mahogany back/sides, the bass response was very good for what I was looking for. My gibson of course is solid rosewood back/sides.

Now the GAD 50 is laminate rosewood back/sides so theoretically it should be as good if not better sounding than the d4nt I currently have, at least when I'm talking about booming responsive bass. The good thing about the GAD 50 on ebay is that there is a 7 day return policy from the seller. So if I buy and the bass does not satisfy then I could return it. However, I'd rather not go through the trouble.

Please help me with this crucial GAS situation!!

Your D4NT has solid sides and a laminate back...as have many Guilds over the past 35+ years (and quite a few Gibsons, too!)

That being said, either guitar is excellent...and you can never have too many Guilds (currently, I own 2 JF-4NTs, 2 F-212XLs, a D-35 and I thinking about getting a GAD JF-48 VERY seriously! ;))

Hmm, didn't realize the d4 had solid sides. Anyways, thanks for the input.

I'll take that as a vote for buy!

The GAD-50 has SOLID rosewood sides and back, not laminated.

Jeff

You know, I knew that until I posted this and all night thought it was laminate:confused: Anyways, I'm glad to have realized again that it is all solid! I made the purchase via ebay - It's a sweet amber sunburst.

Great guitar you have there! I have a GAD-25 and couldn't be happier with it.

These Asian guitars are giving USA-built ones a run for their money, IMO.

If I get the GAD JF-48, I may be selling the D-35...will let you have first crack at it, if I do.

I've got a GAD50; it's wonderful and I keep trying to find more time in the day to play it. You've got a really wonderful burst on there; beats my antique burst hands down.

So, I purchased the Gad 50 thru ebay and it arrived last Friday. The thing was extremely loud and the bass response was fantastic. However, the guitar was extremely noisy and too loud for my taste. It's on it's way back to the owner who guaranteed a full refund if returned within 7 days. I originally bought this Gad 50 to upgrade my current beater guitar (Guild D4NT) but the tone of my D4 is much warmer to my ears with a more rounded tone. This Gad was piercingly loud and very bright.

I can see why some really like the Gad, but it was just too noisy for my taste. I can't really pinpoint the source of the noise, but I guess the overall tone of this guitar was just too in-you-face. I mean this thing was louder than my Gibson AJ :freak: and I like loud, but really it was too loud. Anyways, thought I'd give y'all an update.

Save your money and look for an old Guild ....the new ones may be nice but I once played a series of guilds in a shop: 60's 70's 80's 90's and post fender buy out guilds and IMO the fender ones were not there in terms of tone. ALWAYS buy a bit better thant you can afford

I must admit I'm kinda confused by this...

I mean, one of the reasons to buy dreadnoughts is for how loud they are.

Was the "noisy" factor string buzz?

I know, it's kinda hard to explain. I guess you could say the tone was messy - if you mix messy with loud the result is horrible tone. My AJ is also loud but it has a nice rounded warmth to it. The GAD was just to "open" sounding, basically no balance and just a sloppy, gawdy mess. This is also what I meant by noisy. Part of the problem may have been the strings but even a pair of John Pearse PB couldn't have made that much of a difference. The guitar simply was not pleasant sounding, that's all I can say.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!!

See, this GAD was supposed to be my "beater" guitar - an upgrade from my D4, but the D4 blows this particular GAD out of the water. That's OK, if anything, this just re-affirms that my D4 does not need to be replaced, it's just fine as my second guitar.

The music leader at my church uses a GAD-50 with an LR Baggs pickup. He's an excellent finger picker, along with strong rythm playing. That guitar rings like a bell through the pa. It is big sounding, and perfect for his style. I'd buy one if I didn't have my eye on a Taylor at the moment.:o
