Members jd-drafter Posted April 16, 2007 Members Posted April 16, 2007 first the newbie intro... i am a 36 y.o. CAD Designer and i am really here for my father... a lifelong musician, luthier and mech. engineer. his love of music and his skill as a mech. eng. have led to the creation of his aluminum bodied accoustic guitars (for now, a bass and mandolin are in the works) while i know that wood is the traditonal medium for luthiers, the aluminum has shown some positive attributes. resistance to moisture and temperature make for a very stable platform, and the tones are not as harsh as one may assume. i have several youtube links to video... bear with me on the recordings- i am hoping they are o.k. but i am a rookie.. don't let that color the perception of the guitar... i'll also post a link to some photo's on flickr... the model b3 setup for slide- doing a classic dylan tune- she belongs to me... an orig. composition for slide happiness reigns a marathon looseley based upon "hunka' burnin love" played on the orig. prototype... model ET and some photos... of the B3 on a custom table a friend made...http://www.flickr.com/photos/73172138@N00/ let's discuss... 8^) jd-drafter

Members Terry Allan Hall Posted April 16, 2007 Members Posted April 16, 2007 Don't think I'd want one for "conventional" playing, but the aluminum-bodied guitars I've played (Martin, for one) all sounded great for slide, so I think I'd like a 7-string square-necked model (to be tuned G B D G B D G and/or E B E G# B D E) a lot! Is your dad open to building such a model?BTW, like his picking/singing, too!
Members T.B. Posted April 16, 2007 Members Posted April 16, 2007 Welcome JD. Who would have ever thought of all things an aluminium acoustic? Electric guitar/tube amps builder Mr. Ian Schneller (Chicago IL.) builds an aluminium acoustic. Schellar 'Maccaferri' acoustic aluminium, has an amazingly warm sound. An acquaintance I know owns one -this guys has mad guitar skills- the lush/complex tones he gets out of his 'Maccaferri' are jaw dropping. Here's some info and pics on the 'Macceferri from Specimen's website.http://www.specimenproducts.com/instru/maccaferri.htmlTrinaJD checkout your 1st YouTube posting. Boy, I like the song, the playing and the sound of your dad's aluminium. Any chance he'll build some less bulky? When I get-ta chance I watch the other videos.
Members jd-drafter Posted April 17, 2007 Author Members Posted April 17, 2007 Thanks TB- i'll look into that link... and i am working on making a smaller sized one now... like a parlor size. we can also do acoustic electric. i ma hoping to prototype a hollow body telecaster sized unit to play either way. i'll try and keep you posted.... jd-drafter

Members jd-drafter Posted April 17, 2007 Author Members Posted April 17, 2007 mr terry allen hall- my dad actually wants' to do a 7 string as well... here is what he sent me... --------------------------I have the need for a 7 string slide guitar myself. I am thinking aboutmaking a few 7 string slide guitars. I can make them as the typical solidtop "B3" style or as a National or dobro. The base price for the B3 modelwill still be $1500 but the resonator models will cost an extra $200 for thepurchased cone, cover and spider bridge. I would think about eventuallymaking a square/hollow neck unit but not untill a small company is up andrunning. A square neck is no problem but it is also just for looks. I couldmake one - based on my new, as yet unproduced, aluminum "T" neck.------------------------------ there you go...

No need for the resonator...the basic B3 "aluminum dreadnaught" your dad makes is fine!Look forward to hearing a hollow/square necked version!
