Members tubedrt Posted April 22, 2007 Members Posted April 22, 2007 Found this at the local flea market. $75.00 I figured why not. From my research I believe its a Kay Model k20. Circa 1940. Help me out with this one guys please! Check out the flamed maple neck and back. The sides are as well. The top I believe is solid spruce. Check out the pics and let me know what you think.
Members T.B. Posted April 22, 2007 Members Posted April 22, 2007 I don't know anything about Kay's but here are some sites, hopes this helps. Nice guitar. Damn, I never find anything at flea markets or garage sales, only 50 cent glassware from the five and dime. Congrats http://www.geocities.com/stereoscoptic/kay/index.htmlhttp://www.provide.net/~cfh/other.htmlTrina
Members AK47 Posted April 22, 2007 Members Posted April 22, 2007 Great find. I'm no expert on Kay guitars but I own an old Kamico Kay parlor size guitar with a solid spruce top and solid maple b/s. Mine is a great sounding guitar. Compare the wood grain on the inside to the outside to see if your b/s is solid. Use a small flashlight through the F hole while looking through the other F hole. You probably allready know this. I've found that alot of Kay guitars were laminate and didn't sound that good but some are pure gems. From the pictures yours looks to be quite a gem.
Members Cripes Posted April 22, 2007 Members Posted April 22, 2007 Okay, were those shots blurred or what. The last one on the chair looks pretty good - great find. I'll make a deal with you. You find the guitars, I'll take the pics.
Members Demian03 Posted April 23, 2007 Members Posted April 23, 2007 interesting. action looks on the high side
Members DonK Posted April 23, 2007 Members Posted April 23, 2007 interesting. action looks on the high side Yeah, in the last shot it looks like the neck has tilted upward. Nice find though.
Members Dave W. Posted April 23, 2007 Members Posted April 23, 2007 Yeah, in the last shot it looks like the neck has tilted upward. Nice find though. Even if it's unplayable, for that money it will look good hanging on the wall. Beats a "couple of paintings from Sears".
Members Queequeg Posted April 23, 2007 Members Posted April 23, 2007 nice guitar, man. uhh, how much for the chair?
Members Berkleo Posted April 23, 2007 Members Posted April 23, 2007 Nice find! How many celebratory beers did you have before you snapped the photos?
Members Tony Burns Posted April 24, 2007 Members Posted April 24, 2007 The neck may not be bad, just lay a straight edge on it - you can easily lower that action by removing a bit on the bottom of the bridge . That really is a beautiful guitar - looks good on your mission chair !
