Members Bitt81 Posted April 27, 2007 Members Posted April 27, 2007 I know this is a little off topic regarding acoustic guitars but I'm wondering if some of you saw Steve Martin on Letterman last night. He performed with Bela Fleck and another banjoist (can't remember his name. Anyhow, a really nice performance. He held his own on stage with these guys on a song I guess he wrote.
Members Queequeg Posted April 27, 2007 Members Posted April 27, 2007 he's a very respectable banjoist. his standup comedy routine back in the '70s often included his banjo in Las Vegas. I missed his performance last night, unfortunately. That was Tony Trischka they were performing with. Fabulous. He was blowing my mind on the banjo when Bela Fleck was still a little boy. Watch them play
Members Steverino Posted April 27, 2007 Members Posted April 27, 2007 I have an old lp from the late 70s I'm guessing; it's called The Steve Martin Brothers. One side is his comedy act, the other all banjo, and he's damn good..
Members PAC Posted April 27, 2007 Members Posted April 27, 2007 I'm sorry that I missed it. Yes, he can hold his own. I've heard John McKuen, one of his friends, comment favorably on Martin's playing. Like the Smothers Brothers, or Victor Borge, I don't think that you can play for comedy without being able to "play" to begin with. I still remember Tom and Dick playing without the routines occasionally with guests on their old CBS show. I believe Martin got his comedy break with them as a writer and guest performer.

Yeah, Steve Martin did get his break on the Smothers Brother Comedy Hour. That was a show I never missed back then. I also did see his stand up act at the Richfield Colleseum sometime in the early 70's. Between his acting, writing, and musicianship, he's a really talented guy.

Yes, he actually started as a writer on the Smothers Bros show.
