Members 32-20-Blues Posted April 28, 2007 Members Posted April 28, 2007 Okay, I'm playing a very cheap steel string at the moment (50 dollars ), and it chokes out if I put a capo any further up the neck than the fifth fret. With good quality acoustic, which has been set-up well, what's the highest fret I could put a capo on? Basically, I want to know how high up the neck you guys go. Thanks.
Members Cripes Posted April 28, 2007 Members Posted April 28, 2007 You should be able to use a capo all the way up to the point you can't get your hands on the neck to play.
Members babablowfish Posted April 28, 2007 Members Posted April 28, 2007 I personally don't play beyond the 8th fret. The frets get too narrow past there for my big meaty hand. But I play a lot at the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th.
Members 32-20-Blues Posted April 28, 2007 Author Members Posted April 28, 2007 Thanks guys, that's what I was hoping.

MY J-150 can go way up and still sound great. But I never really play it capoed above about 7. My Martin 000-15S can go to 7 too and sound good, although as a 12 fretter, there's not much left on the fretboard. MY J-45, doesn't sound as good capoed up that far.
Members KINNORDAVIYD Posted April 29, 2007 Members Posted April 29, 2007 The farther down the fretboard that you place the capo, the sound might get rather "tinny" sounding. Have you tried a "Short Cut Capo" yet?

No I haven't; I just visited their website, it looks very interesting - I have taken a hacksaw to plenty of capos in the past for the purposes of drone strings, etc. I tried out the tune on my brothers D15 today, capo on the seventh fret, and it sounds pretty good.
