I'm starting to have 2nd doubts about reading all these guitar reviews, any reviews, for that matter. I'm not made of stone. Surely, when I hear 30 people raving about some guitar, it's gotta influence me on some level.

It just depends on what mood I'm in during that period. If I'm in one of my "concuring" states, then I'll probably have a more favorable approach. If I'm feeling cranky and/or "defiant", well, the opposite might just come true.

So from now on, I'm going to try my best to go in "fresh". I'll have only myself to congratulate or blame later.

Now who's siding with me on this whole e-licks debate (his "cool" high-five hanging-in-the-balance)

I'm with you. I still love reading guitar reviews but for the most part I just make up my own mind. Sometimes I'll pick up a guitar that people have raved about and though "meh." I played some Larrivees today and while they were nice guitar, I don't think they're worth the $1000 (I played the D-03 and the L-03R) they cost. Other guys absolutely love theirs, and that's cool. Too each his own.

J. may I call you J? In this particular case, I'm going to have to disagree with you. Play the D03R that's been strung with e-licks. See what you think and let us know what you think.

Other than that, I'm also with ya...

Uh oh......sounds like someone is ready to pull the trigger on an Ovation......

worse than that. I think he's contemplating a banjo!

hope he remembers to drop some breadcrumbs along the trail so he can find his way back...

I like to focus on the negative reviews. They give me something to consider when I actually get out and try the equipment I am considering.

This is a great approach. When I got my Epi Masterbilt, I tried to find what people didn't like about it and see if it happened on any of the guitars I tried out at GC.

It sounds to me as though he has made a very accurate observation. I find Larrivees to be very pretty guitars, but have found them to only be adequate for barefinger players, unless you are just going to sit around the living room and it is the only instrument being played. I have played every dreadnought model from a D-03 to a D-60, and they are woefully lacking in projection ... my brother has an L-09 ... beautiful guitar, plays great around the house, but if you want to flatpick it with other instruments around, it has to be plugged in ... and I'm not much more plugging in ...

I never read guitar reviews. Or any guitar magazine for that matter. When I went to buy a quality guitar I walked into the store without any preconceived opinions or brand preference. I played a bunch of guitars and bought a Martin D35. That was a mistake! After two weeks I just was not happy with the bassy tone of that guitar. Went back and exchanged it for another guitar. I decide on a Martin Hd28-VR after playing and hearing everything else and gladly paid the extra money. Love that guitar!

I have a $400 Ovation. It's my second guitar, got it after playing for I think 2 or 3 years. It won't be my last guitar. It's not perfect, but I'll say this--for guitars under $400 with electronics, it's at least more articulate and brighter than most.

But if your budget's much higher than that, you can do better.
