Members Harmonycat Posted May 14, 2007 Members Posted May 14, 2007 ...........That one brand or model is "better" than another??? I guess that depends on the context of evaluation. I have a really great Sitka/Mahogany guitar that has a pronounced deep and solid bass response. It also has very clear and distinct fundamentals. I do not think it is boomy or that it lacks overtones. It projects very well and is not quiet be any means. I LOVE it. It is different than another even toned, very, very, harmonic Englemann/Rosewood that has less emphasis on the fundamental. Very Choral sounding. The bass is solid and not lacking, while the fundamental is not predominant relatively to the other guitar. It just has neither the bass or fundamental predominace of the other one. It is a very, very loud guitar. I LOVE it. Either one is "better" in certain aspects than the other. It is FAIR to say that? I feel blessed and fortunate to have these two among my collection of guitars. All of which have redeeming qualities and wonderfully different characteristics. Most of my guitars are different brands. I love them all because they are the vessels of my music and provide santuary and comfort when I play any of them. I am not brand prejudiced. I just don't feel that it is FAIR to make disparaging comments about anyone elses choices or individual preferences. For the record I have played Taylors and Larrivees that I did not care for....I have also played specimens or various models of each that I just LOVED and did not want to put down. I have also played Chinese Brand Labelled and Japanese Luthier quality guitars that are just phenomenal. I have played US Made, and Canadian Made guitars that were also mind blowing. I have been surprised too many times by fabulous guitars that are inexpensive and by expensive guitars that were not at all impressive. It taught me to keep a very open mind. The real fun is picking up and playing a guitar that you have never played and doing a doubletake because it is so great. If it is expensive I always think..."Well for this much money it should be great....I guess that is why it is a Martin,Gibson,Yairi,Larrivee,Taylor...Huss and Dalton, Collings or what ever". You get the point. It is interesting when it is realtively inexpensive instrument with a knockout tone that gets me shaking my head, and saying "This is unbelievable for the bucks". I usually start playing all kinds of different stuff looking for a fault in the guitar that maybe does not exist. THAT....never fails to reinforce my views about where great guitars are found, and that a guitar can be great regardless of what brand name is on the headstock. It is always charmingly enjoyable to be surprised by excellence. I guess I really love guitars too much to trash a brand because of a popular generallity surrounding it. There are just too many exceptions!!! :D
Members Freeman Keller Posted May 14, 2007 Members Posted May 14, 2007 Amen, 'bro. Any guitar that is making music is better than any guitar that isn't. And happier, too.
Members AK47 Posted May 14, 2007 Members Posted May 14, 2007 Each one of my guitars are better that the others of the porpose I use it for. Every fish has its place in the sea.
Members guitarist21 Posted May 14, 2007 Members Posted May 14, 2007 Well I'm pretty sure my Epi Masterbilt is "better" than my Washburn dread in every regard except the emotional attachment I have to the Washburn. "Betterness" is in the eye of the beholder. Ellen

Members Cripes Posted May 14, 2007 Members Posted May 14, 2007 The question is...are you better on one guitar than another? An accomplished guitarist is said to be able to make any POS sound good. But, h/she playing as well on the POS as guitar h/she does on his/her guitar of choice? I have played many guitars that sound good. Different makes/models all jumbled up and played the same have not - not one of them - put a stupid grin on my face as the Goodall I played recently. There is a genie inside that guitar that never heard of the 3-wishes rule.
Members EvilTwin Posted May 14, 2007 Members Posted May 14, 2007 I never think of the guitars I have as "better" than the others, really. My Tacoma DM-18 has its place. So does my Guild GAD-25. So does my Seagull Folk and Cordoba Gitano. They all do their own thing. Labelling one better would be like saying "chicken is better than steak." I'll have them both when I feel like it, thank you very much.
