Members AugTPD Posted May 16, 2007 Members Posted May 16, 2007 What does "on the cheap side" mean. For some that is $250, for others it is anything under $1,000. And are you wanting hog back/sides or all mahogany? If you're talking about just back and sides there are a lot of great options.
Members jerime Posted May 16, 2007 Author Members Posted May 16, 2007 Well mainly back and sides, and by cheap I mean $250 give or take.
Members Freeman Keller Posted May 16, 2007 Members Posted May 16, 2007 Find a used Yamaha FG-150 with a straight neck (laminated mahogany b/s, lam spruce top). Not quite OM/000 shape but close. I have one and it is a remarkable little guitar.
Members AugTPD Posted May 16, 2007 Members Posted May 16, 2007 Check out the Alvarez RF20SM. Solid Mahogany top, laminate Mahogany back/sides. Usually go for around $200-$225. Also check out the AF60S (solid spruce top/lam 'hog back/sides) that goes for around $300. Both are pretty close to what I would guess you are looking for and Alvarez makes awesome stuff for the money.

Members EvilTwin Posted May 16, 2007 Members Posted May 16, 2007 Yup, for the specs you have, Alvarez will probably be your best bet. However, I think it's worth your while to check out Seagull, too. They're around the same price, and the "Folk" body is great for fingerstyle like OM's and 000's.

Members guit30 Posted May 16, 2007 Members Posted May 16, 2007 The Rf20sm is a true hoghttp://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/RF20SM.htm
Members jerime Posted May 16, 2007 Author Members Posted May 16, 2007 I've been eyeing that RF20SM now for quite some time. I just haven't had the chance to play one. For a little more there is a Morgan Monroe Creekside that looks very nice. Just not sure if I want to spend the extra money yet or not. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=020&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=300111593460&rd=1&rd=1
Members AugTPD Posted May 16, 2007 Members Posted May 16, 2007 If you are used to a typical neck width (1 11/16") and a typical scale length (around 25.5") then I would still go with the Alvarez. That Morgan has a wider nut width at 1.75 and a shorter scale. For some that is a good thing, but others won't like it. Just FYI. I have seen some Morgan Monroe's up close and they seem to be well made, and that one sure looks nice. Keep us updated on what you end up getting.
Members thatsbunk Posted May 16, 2007 Members Posted May 16, 2007 i wanted to bid on this guitar yesterday but didn't have a chance to get near a computer & missed it. It has a pretty big gash but i'm looking for a beater. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130111367849&rd=1&rd=1 i'm intrigued by some of the stuff this seller has for sale... anyone have any experience with him?
Members jerime Posted May 16, 2007 Author Members Posted May 16, 2007 I saw that one and bid at the last second, but didn't bid in time. Even with the gash I still can't believe it went that cheap. That seller always has some pretty interesting looking stuff, but I haven't delt with him. The short scale doesn't bother me, but the neck width might. Anyone have any experience with the Epiphone EL-00?

That Morgan Monroe looks like a nice fingerstyle guitar. I'm a big fan of the Alvarez RF20SM.
Members Fantfool Posted May 16, 2007 Members Posted May 16, 2007 I bought my 12 string Alvarez A/E from them. Very nice to do business with. They get a lot of Alvarez acoustics that have varying degrees of damage, or cracks and sometimes do their own repairs. The 12er I got from them had a repaired back crack and you could only see it if you looked really hard.
Members guitarist21 Posted May 16, 2007 Members Posted May 16, 2007 Old Gibson LG-0s have a lot of vibe. I have one and love it. Usually going for around $500 nowadays, I think? Ellen
