Members kelleygraphy Posted May 17, 2007 Members Posted May 17, 2007 I just recently bought a Guild gad 30r which had a LR Baggs ribbon pu in it.I need a preamp of some kind for it as the signal is pretty weak. I was wondering if a mama bear would act as a preamp or not. I might pick one upif it has the capability to both act as a preamp and give me the modeling.Any advise would be appreciated. By the way allthough I've been reading this forum for a while, this is my first post. Thanks ahead of time. kelleygraphy
Members DonK Posted May 17, 2007 Members Posted May 17, 2007 The D-TAR MamaBear IS a pre-amp, albeit it one that has certain modeling capabilities. Pretty pricey, though, unless you really want it for the modeling features.
Members Rickkkk Posted May 17, 2007 Members Posted May 17, 2007 I'm unfamiliar with the D-Tar Mama Bear. The one I use is the L.R. Baggs Para-Acoustic D.I. (the "PADI"). No modelling or effects, but does the job it's supposed to and it's a solid bloody thing - no qulams about using it live or carting it around. I use it for a variety of instrument / PU combinations, from my A&L pre-amped A/E to an old mandolin with a stick-on sound-board transducer (SBT) PU. Has a gain level adjustment for fine tuning between different signal levels. Cheers !
Members kelleygraphy Posted May 19, 2007 Author Members Posted May 19, 2007 Thanks for the advise on the PADI. I bought one and it made a world of difference in the clarity of signal . I looked at the impedance matching of the mama bear and as far as I could tell the mama bear didn't have the required impedance that the Baggs ribbon called for. I don't know how much of a difference it would have been, but for $350.00 I didn't want to buy it and find out it would not work. Thanks again
