Members Peridon Posted May 20, 2007 Members Posted May 20, 2007 Hey guys. I just bought a new Guild Gad 30R. The guitar sounds and looks great....except for the open 4th string when I hold down the 7th fret on the sixth string. When I hold down the 7th fret on the sixth string and play the open 4th string, the 4th string buzzes when I am using a pick or my fingers. The guitar has no other fret buzz anywhere else on guitar. The 4th string only buzzes when I hold the 7th fret of the sixth string. That's the only time it has fret buzz. How can the guitar be perfect everywhere except one fret? Any idea what the problem is? I changed strings. I can't figure it out. Thanks. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Members Hamhand Posted May 20, 2007 Members Posted May 20, 2007 I recently had the same experience when changing strings. I had buzzing that had never occurred in 20 years prior. Readjusted the neck and viola! No more problem. It's likely that simple. Good luck.
Members Cripes Posted May 20, 2007 Members Posted May 20, 2007 The short answer is...don't fret the 6th string at the 7th fret. A more ass-toot answer might be taking a 6 inch straight edge ruler and placing the edge flat on the fret board length-wise and see if it rocks (see-saws) on a particular fret. If so, you have a high fret and it's time to see a tech. If you have recently changed strings, the ball end of the 4th string may not be seated inside the guitar against the bridge plate - close - but not seated. The frequency of the 6th string when played at the 7th fret may be the resonant frequency causing the 4th string ball end to buzz against the bridge plate. If you changed to a lighter string gauge the neck may require a bit of an adjustment, like Hamhand indicates, to remove the buzz. This is SOP when switching string gauges up or down. Some guitars are more sensitive to switching than others. Nut slot may be opened up too much letting the 4th string dance in the groove at the 7th fretted 6th string frequency. Last, you might have a bogus string. This happened a little while ago to another member. He changed the string and voila!
Members Peridon Posted May 21, 2007 Author Members Posted May 21, 2007 Cripes, since the buzz was coming from the 4th string, I just assumed the problem was with that particular string, pin, etc. What you wrote got me thinking that maybe the problem was coming from somewhere else. I never bothered changing the 6th string since the guitar arrived. Was it possible that the 6th string wasn't on correctly and that somehow affected the sound of the open 4th string? Well, I changed the 6th string and there isn't any fret buzz anymore!!!!!!!!!!! All gone! One string isn't on properly and it makes two strings away from it buzz and yet the string that wasn't on correctly didn't buzz at all. WTF? I was worried there might be a serious problem afoot and not just a neck readjustment that Hamhand suggested. Cripes, what you wrote solved my problem. Thanks a lot. This place really is great. Ham, thanks for your advice also.
Members Cripes Posted May 21, 2007 Members Posted May 21, 2007 You are very welcome. But, the credit belongs to this forum. The info I suggested I learned right here and yes, this place really is great. BTW, I haven't seen you before so...welcome aboard.
