Members d03nut Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 The other day, I had a friend over to help me with some computer-related stuff. After we were done, I opened up a big bag of chips to go with the couple of beers -well, more like 4 each- we were going to have. Anyway, as we were shooting the breeze and feeling "good", all of a sudden, he reached for my "exposed" acoustic and before I got a chance to scream "no" in "slo-mo", he began playing the one chord that I had taught him previously. Even though he had wiped his hands clean using a napkin, I wasn't too happy. But I didn't say anything. Years ago, I had a similar experience. Except then, I was the "offender". I was over at a musician friend's place and sure enough I grabbed one of his acoustics (he had one in each room) just out of curiosity (this is before I started playing myself). He, however, swiftly and "firmly" asked me to wash my hands even though we hadn't "consumed" anything. I remember being somewhat "offended" by his demand. Who does he think he is? Is he implying that I'm dirty, or what? I was young. Plus I didn't own any instruments. Grease is the word......
Members Dan Hall Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 Who are you, man?? I dunno mister, but there's an imposter floating around here these days without the silent 3. I wipe 'em down about onecet a month if'n they needs it or don't. Course, I don't own nothin' nice.
Members smatel Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 Keep the dream alive, brother... keep the ( less abstract ) dream alive!
Members Tony Burns Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 I though the oil from potatoe chips was a good fretboard lubricant ? Cant figure out why yu would be mad at your friend , i figure hes helping you out . Just cant figure out todays youth !
Members Queequeg Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 I'm not as fussy as I used to be about this kind of thing. worse thing to happen is your strings need replacing sooner than otherwise. my friends are all, each of them, worth more than a set of strings, so I probably wouldn't think anything of it. but still, you have to respect the owner's wishes, whatever they are.
Members kwakatak Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 Dude, I don't even think about it - I've got kids. There's actually sand inside my Tak and it sounds like a maraca when I pick it up. I'm just too lazy too try and vacuum it out - that hose ain't gonna fit unless I loosen the strings.
Members d03nut Posted June 1, 2007 Author Members Posted June 1, 2007 Who are you, man?? I'm afraid in the absence of a smilie -and thankfully a "middle finger" sign- I cannot deduce the true "implication" of your post. Which leaves me no choice but to think that the question was meant to be somewhat "rhetorical"..... I must, however, inform you that I haven't been able to use my smilies since the site "upgrade".

Well, most of the time... I know smatel personaly. We've been known to toss back a few good scotch's on a saturday night. Plus I recorded my bits for the HCAG album on his rig. My guess is, he means "who are you, man"?
Members athomas Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 I have a hard time saying no to my friends when they come over or when I am at a gig. I mostly leave my guitar in the case even at home.
Members Krash Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 No one touches my guitars except me.No one.Ever.

If I'm aiming at derogatory, I'm articulate enough to make that intent clear. Your writing style has changed lately and I was curious.
Members riffmeister Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 I would only object if the potato chips had trans fats in them.
Members thedep3158 Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 My son, who is 13, is taking guitar lessons. Luckily he is left handed and doesn't mess with my guitars. HOWEVER he does have friends who also play and when they come over, they know not to mess with my acoustics. I let them use my electrics, except for my Koa Tele. Most of my friends who play know to ask, they just don't pick up my guitars and start playing. I say yes unless they've been eating Fritos or Cheetos. Dep
Members d03nut Posted June 1, 2007 Author Members Posted June 1, 2007 Yes sir, Mr. d03nut. If I'm aiming at derogatory, I'm articulate enough to make that intent clear. I wasn't suggesting that at all. It's just that sometimes we forget this "medium's" shortcomings in our x-changes. It's hard to "hear tone of voice/read face" in a reply. So basically, I didn't know what to make of your comment. More than anything else, I was curious myself. In fact, even if you were going for "derogatory", given your past contributions here, I don't think I would have been that "offended". It's not like you played with my guitar with "dirty" hands. As for the change in my "writing style" -if you want to call it that- some of it is conscious (I think I kind of "plateaued" once I hit the "millenium" posts mark) and some of it is "sub-C". But i still think that judging by the number of "air quotes", the degree of off-tee-ness of my material and the overall lack of "sense"' thereof, my "PUI" levels, and the length of my "psychobabble", it's safe to say not much has changed in my posts.
Members d03nut Posted June 1, 2007 Author Members Posted June 1, 2007 I dunno mister, but there's an imposter floating around here these days without the silent 3. Actually Dan, one of the comments I remember most in my "millenial" post was by you. In it, you said that I shouldn't succumb to any "self-imposed" pressure regarding "laying low" just because I had said so. That I should continue to post whenever I'm in the mood. I'm taking that advice seriously, albeit, with not so great "results".
Members smatel Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 If someone comes over and I know them to be at least as developed player as I am, AND have demonstrated respect for instruments, they can pick up and play whatever they want. I expect someone I've never heard, or someone I know to be a fledgling to ask.
Members Michael Martin Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 ...there's an imposter floating around here these days...I love it! "Imposter": an impostor who posts! Excellent neologism! You heard it here first, folks: credit Dan Hall!
Members recordingtrack1 Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 I have always a couple of "beaters" laying around in obvious places. My good guitars, I keep in the case, in the closet untils such time as I need them. Saves a lot of friendships. RT1:blah:

Members brahmz118 Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 I've worked with some regressed psych patients who strummed my guitar with their feet. Some of these kids liked to handle / play with their feces when no one was looking, so in many cases their feet were cleaner than their hands. Why even let them touch my guitar at all? Well sometimes it was the only thing that could calm them and prevent them from pulling out medical tubes or other self-injurious behaviors. Fortunately 99% of my cases are not psych patients, and I never bring my really nice guitars into situations like this. The disinfectants that I use to clean my instruments supposedly cause cancer. They make my strings feel rough, but I barely notice since I play with gloves. The chemicals also seem to be turning the finishes on my work guitars into a milky white color. Potato chip grease ... not so bad.
Members Michael Martin Posted June 1, 2007 Members Posted June 1, 2007 ...but I barely notice since I play with gloves. Eh? Really? Why? What kind? Are the glove fingers cut off, a la Michael Jackson?

I took a holiday myself, just because I've noticed I don't have much of a life outside of this damned computer. Work was so much easier than retirement. I don't think we can all remain right on that ragged edge of appropriate and outragious all the time. It's begins to look an awful lot like polishing one's own statue. Keep up the good work mister.
