Members Gremson Posted June 3, 2007 Members Posted June 3, 2007 I've been wanting a new acoustic to replace my Martin DXM for a while now. I've finally sold the martin, and I'm considering either going with Blueridge, or Alvarez. I'll admit that I'm more of an electric kinda guy, and I don't know a whole lot about the acoustic aspect of guitar. I've always played dreadnaughts, and I'm not sure if a "000" style (if I'm even describing it right) would suite me better.I don't want to list any types of sounds I'm going for, I'm just curous how you guys would describe either body type. Thanks a lot for all your help.Grem.
Members AugTPD Posted June 3, 2007 Members Posted June 3, 2007 I think this might help a little bit more than trying to explain it with words... http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Musician/Guitar/FlatTopSizes/sizes.html Lots of pics and stuff.... As far as sound goes, big strummer guys tend to favor dreads and jumbos. Fingerpickers like the 000 or OM guitars a little better. There are exceptions to that rule as well. I'm more of a strummer but my only guitar is a Guild GAD30R which is an OM size. I just like the smaller body and the more balanced sound. Anyway, good luck shopping!!!
Members AndThinkOfTexas Posted June 3, 2007 Members Posted June 3, 2007 IMHO - 000's are less "full". As the previous post mentions - they are typically used for fingerpicking. Sure, you can strum a 000, but if you're looking to play big, booming, "fill the room" solo stuff... I'd suggest a Dreadnaught or a Jumbo (I prefer the Jumbo - similar in shape to a x0, but larger). Speaking of Jumbo - Alvarez, which you said you were interested in, makes a killer Jumbo that sells for a reasonable price: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Alvarez-AJ60SC-Artist-Series-Jumbo-AcousticElectric-Cutaway?sku=518791 I have owned one for several years and it serves as my back up - I love it, you might also.
Members riffmeister Posted June 3, 2007 Members Posted June 3, 2007 Bigger body size of a dread gives it a bigger, boomier bass. Smaller, shallower body size of an OM trims out lows, the net effect of which is more focus and clarity thoughout the range. Two very complimentary guitar types. I have one of each:
Members Tony Burns Posted June 3, 2007 Members Posted June 3, 2007 Why not a Larrivee ? in the long run you will be disapointed with the Blueridge or alvarez - Hey collings are real nice too ( Nice guitars -Riffmeister )-- i just think those orient guitars come up short in the long run , id spend more now and get yourself something better for the long run ( its also cheaper to buy the best from the start -selling and upgrading ) like that old saying buy it cheap buy it twice , and you still dont have the best !

Members mikechoate Posted June 3, 2007 Members Posted June 3, 2007 Personally, if I could only own one type of guitar, I'd go with a 000 body over a dread. You can always plug it in or mic it if you really need that extra volume.

Members Gremson Posted June 4, 2007 Author Members Posted June 4, 2007 Cute kitty.I've never heard about Larrivee before, I'll have to check it out. Thanks for all the info. Maybe I'll post some pictures of what I get.
Members Bernie P. Posted June 4, 2007 Members Posted June 4, 2007 I'm not so sure Larrivee's are all that great of a deal.A lot of the reviews I read here complain about the Ping tuners and the tusq nut/saddle.Some say the Lar sound takes some getting use to.You can get a couple nice Asian gits for the price of an L03R.The nearest dealers about a 4hr drive so I wont be checking them out for myself any time soon.

Regarding the post about BlueRidge, mine is extremely well made (dare I say perfect), certainly better than any other Asian guitar I have seen. I also have a Seagull S6+ and the BlueRidge is a much better guitar (better woods and better craftsmanship). The BlueRidge also has a bone nut and bridge, compared to Tusq on the Seagull.
Members Dave Keir Posted June 4, 2007 Members Posted June 4, 2007 Many folks (including me) claim that an OM is a great solution to the "lower power" of a straight OOO. Now, an OM has the same body shape - and therefore the same ergonomics - as a OOO but comes with a longer sale and scalloped bracing (generally) which gives it a bigger sound.

Even with the Ping tuners and Tusq saddle / nut, the Larrivee 03 series is still one of the best buys under a $1000 on the market. The build quality and tone are exceptional for the money. You should actually play one before recommending that people should avoid them.
Members Freeman Keller Posted June 4, 2007 Members Posted June 4, 2007 I have two big beautiful (fairly expensive) dreads that I rarely play because they ae big boomy dreads (duh). I have lovely little 000/OM/GA guitars that I play all the time because they are delightfully balanced and suit my fingerstyle playing perfectly. If I was going to own only one guitar it would be an OM or 000, But, since you don't want us to describe the sounds, here are the differences http://www.martinguitar.com/guitars/features/shapes.html http://www.martinguitar.com/guitars/choosing/size.html
Members Bernie P. Posted June 4, 2007 Members Posted June 4, 2007 I didn't recommend avoiding them I just said I think there are better deals for the money-YMMV.I checked a few places and the L03R I referred to runs about 1350.
Members T.B. Posted June 4, 2007 Members Posted June 4, 2007 is that a picture of a cat on the table? You are so silly .............. you guys make me laugh a lot. Trina
Members Markuster Posted June 4, 2007 Members Posted June 4, 2007 I checked a few places and the L03R I referred to runs about 1350. http://www.larrivee.com/flash/products/guitars/L-03R/l03r.html $1349 is the list price. Street price should be considerably less.
