Members Dan Hall Posted June 5, 2007 Members Posted June 5, 2007 That is a nice burst on there. Wow! Good for you. Get a Goodsell Super 17. Great Amps.
Members kwakatak Posted June 5, 2007 Members Posted June 5, 2007 Special Edition Sienna Sunburst Strat Tex Ceramic pickups Fishman acoustic tremolo bridge tortis guard AND backplate. Drop dead gorgeous Michael! Damn you, Whalebot! Here I was this time last week I believe posting over on the Electric Forum about how my natural ash MIA Strat has cured me of electric GAS. And then you go and post THAT! Either I'm gonna have to make an addendum to my list of "Guitars that I'd like to have but no way in Hell am I gonna ever own" ... or I'm gonna have to try and find somebody who will put a burst like that on the Strat I already have. BTW - didn't Hudman used to own that guitar? Ooops! Forgot to post on-topic. Sorry. I'm not up on amps but I say you can't go wrong with something tube-driven, at least 20W, preferably with a suede cabinet and built-in reverb and tremolo effects. You should probably consider an overdrive pedal too. In that case I recommend the Digitech Bad Monkey which costs all of $40.
Members Whalebot Posted June 5, 2007 Author Members Posted June 5, 2007 Thanks guys, in the meantime would it hurt anything to run this Fu**er through my acoustasonic Jr DSP with an overdrive pedal?
Members Dan Hall Posted June 5, 2007 Members Posted June 5, 2007 Thanks guys, in the meantime would it hurt anything to run this Fu**er through my acoustasonic Jr DSP with an overdrive pedal? Of course not, but that guitar deserves a boutique amplifier. http://www.superseventeen.com/home.html
Members Whalebot Posted June 5, 2007 Author Members Posted June 5, 2007 Dammit Dan!!! So I CAN run it through my acoustic amp? But will it sound any good?
Members Dan Hall Posted June 5, 2007 Members Posted June 5, 2007 But will it sound any good?Hideous, disconcerting, unsatisfactory, disturbing, disgusting, disheartening, horrible, limp, flaccid. Enjoy.
Members Whalebot Posted June 5, 2007 Author Members Posted June 5, 2007 Excellent, that was the sound I was looking for.
Members Dan Hall Posted June 5, 2007 Members Posted June 5, 2007 Excellent, that was the sound I was looking for.Oh, the amp! I misunderstood. All that was how I feel today.
Members Hudman Posted June 5, 2007 Members Posted June 5, 2007 Sienna Sunburst over ash? I used to own one like that with a rosewood fretboard. Trust me, I searched high and low for amps. I owned many different brands. The best pure tone amp I ever owned was a MIA Fender Blues Junior. Don't laugh, it's plenty loud and sounds great with a good OD pedal. A great amp if you can mic it up and run it through a PA system. Jeff Healy uses the smaller version, the Pro Junior. Most guys buy too much amp when they join a band. Buy a $400 Blues Jr. and save your budget for effect pedals. Trust me, you will be on a never ending quest for tone and color.
Members Whalebot Posted June 6, 2007 Author Members Posted June 6, 2007 Blues Jr. hey? I'll try one out.
Members guit30 Posted June 6, 2007 Members Posted June 6, 2007 Memorial Day, I was playing a Strat thru a Fender Hot Rod Deville, really sweet, you didn't need an overdrive pedal with this baby Jim
Members kwakatak Posted June 6, 2007 Members Posted June 6, 2007 Hud and guit30 are I have the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe which falls between the Blues Jr. and Hot Rod Deville in size but not necessarily in features. It's a 40W 3 channel amp (one clean, two with increased gain) with built-in reverb. It has a single 10" cone (I believe the Deville is similar but with 2 10" cones) which makes it a little too big/loud for home-only use. OTOH it's small enough to be easily set up and transported via your personal vehicle (though preferably a hatchback) yet powerful enough to project in a hall that seats 300. The strong point of this amp's tone is its clean channel. With the right effects chain you don't really need the 2 gain channels because they pretty much sound like crap unless you crank the amp above 4. At that volume it's a bit loud though, but I know of a couple people here at HC and the Fender forums who use attenuators to get the decibles down to a more reasonable level while still allowing the power amp tubes to properly warm up. I've also heard that it's also a good idea to upgrade the tubes but I've never attempted it with my 8 year-old HRDx - though I suspect it's about time. Again, the best cheap effects upgrade is the Bad Monkey and if you want to practice with that guitar using headphones then you should check out Reaper (shareware multitrack editing software) along with the Freeamp 2 plugin. You'll have to fiddle with the I/O settings to battle the latency lag but if you keep the speakers low the unplugged sound from the guitar might keep you from getting thrown off-tempo too badly.
Members AugTPD Posted June 6, 2007 Members Posted June 6, 2007 Whalebot bought a guitar with not only 1, but 2 cutaways..... I guess electrics don't count though. As far as amps go I'll echo what has already been said, most guys seem to overbuy wanting something that'll get real loud. A smaller amp with better tone is the way to go although I can't give any suggestions as I haven't really looked into electric stuff for a long time.

I also play my Strat through a HotRod Deluxe. Besides the fact that it's a single 12-inch speaker, not a 10-inch, I agree completely with everything Neil said about it. Great choice. They go for about CAD$700 up here. The larger Hot Rod DeVille is a fantastic sounding amp - but hUGE ! Comes in either 4x10 or 2x12 flavours ... I couldn't justify the size or expense (CAD$1100) in my case, but they DO sound good ... Cheers !
Members DonK Posted June 6, 2007 Members Posted June 6, 2007 Gorgeous. Get a Fender SupersSonic and you'll be set.

Members moctzal Posted June 6, 2007 Members Posted June 6, 2007 I'm looking at getting a Pro Junior for myself right now. Just got an '81 Fender Bullet. Can't wait 'till it gets here.
Members Whalebot Posted June 6, 2007 Author Members Posted June 6, 2007 This is all an exercise in futility, I have NO MONEY, I traded straight out for the Fender and I'm left dreaming about an amp. I'll make do with what I have or can borrow right now. Thanks for the help guys, I'm liking the Blues Jr. for the size of my practice room/studio.
Members Markuster Posted June 6, 2007 Members Posted June 6, 2007 Another Hot Rod Deluxe owner here. Lots of good stuff here: http://studentweb.eku.edu/justin_holton/ Enjoy that fine looking Strat! Markus
