So I played a few Taylors today...

and to be honest I might have changed my mind about not liking them a little (but just a little). I had really only ever tried the 2 extremes of Taylors, high end $2,000+ and the big baby Taylor. Today the guy at one of my local music stores handed me the 110 and at first I was sceptical. After a few minutes of playing I started to enjoy it, to my surprise.

I think why I've been so sceptical with Taylors is the big baby just seemed cheap to me. Which of course it is for a Taylor, but to me $400 isn't really that cheap for a guitar that feels cheap. Then the $2000+ ones just didn't seem all that special to me, at least not for that kind of money.

I guess the thing that really started to change my mind was the neck of the guitar. It seems to me Taylors have necks better suited for electric players. Which I mainly am, but prefer to play acoustic if that makes any sense.

Anyway after hearing in one of the Walden threads that Walden was started by someone working at Taylor and most had Taylor specs it makes me think, ahh maybe a cheaper alternative?

So anyway that's my rambling for the day. Your thoughts?????

For the price of a Taylor 110,you can get a top of the line Walden,or a Epiphone Masterbuilt or a GAD Guild. I used to like Taylor when they first came out,but now the price of them skyrocketed.

I mainly play electric, too, and I love my Taylor 310. I liked it even better when I replaced the stock Elixir strings. Great guitar all around! Now to find a pickup and amp for it...

I am primarily an electric player too; which is why I have a Taylor 414CE, T-5 S, and a spruce top Baby. My band partner just retired his early '70's Guild dread in favor of a new 714CE for his solo acoustic gigs.

I love my 810ce. I picked it up in the store, sat myself down, and was instantly blown away. The crystal clear highs, and a balanced bass spoke to me. 15 minutes alter it was mine.

The only issue I've had (and it wasn't really with the guitar) was the drying out in my house. The fret ends began to stick out, but with a little humidifying, it was perfect again:thu:

I love the looks and the feel and the tone when amplified. I just can't connect with the tone when played without amplification. That said, I recognize them as really well-made guitars.

Im not surprised that Taylor sold that many last year , with all the advertising dollars they spend and big name endoresments they pay for - kinda like how teenagers like Britney Spears or someother heart throb who cant sing makes a buck- They advertise the heck out of it , I believe most of the folks who buy these guitars buy them because some star bought them , and they are brain washed - I also think they wouldnt know a decent guitar like Martin , Collings ,Larrivee etc. if it fell on them . I think most of what sells anything is hype and popularity , or that is cool to own this or that. No I dont hate Taylor Guitars , a few months back when i was looking for a new guitar I gave them an honest shot - played alot of their models and i had a hard time finding a GS in Rosewood - but I did play them , and they were not my cup of tea.

Um...you forgot to include Gibson in your list :p Seriously though, I have played and owned several Taylors, but could never find one that didn't have too much of an inherent brightness to it.

That said, I will say this for Taylor: every Taylor I've had my hands on, was always very well made (quality wise) and played great. Whateever their QC policies are, they seem to work well

hmm...interesting because I just sold my Collings to purchase Taylor 414CE. No regrets and I have owned several of all the brands you mentioned.

Goes to show that it's really subjective.

To note, Taylor specifically says they don't pay artists to endorse their product, if I remember correctly. The artist pays for all of their guitars. I bought my taylor because I liked the feel of the neck, the fact that it was an US made instrument and better quality then Martin at the same price.
