Members meyhna'ch Posted June 10, 2007 Members Posted June 10, 2007 I bought a couple of days ago a cheapo uke, those mahalo thingys for 20$. It plays great considering what I paid for, I'm really having a great time with it. The thing that bugs me is that it goes out of tune after a couple of songs, not much, but enough to be a pain in the ass. What I'm wondering is what causes it to go out of tune, the strings, the nut or the tuners? Or all of them? I don't think the nut is such an issue because plastic strings don't cause much friction like metal strings on an acoustic or electric. The tuners look like crap, but they do their job, I'm just not sure which element to change to make it stay in tune. Thanks!
Members Chirpy_72 Posted June 10, 2007 Members Posted June 10, 2007 If it has friction tuners ( not geared, but just stuck into the headstock and held in place with washers ) there's a good suspect. I'd also guess the strings will stretch out for a few days until properly broken in.
Members Howard Posted June 10, 2007 Members Posted June 10, 2007 Have you changed the strings? I got a little red mahalo uke for my son and the strings were wound on with too many turns - literally down beyond the spindle. Changed the strings and tuning became a lot more stable. intonation is still out, but I'm going to blame the nut for that...
Members Treborklow Posted June 11, 2007 Members Posted June 11, 2007 I had that problem as well. A good set of Uke strings helped the tuning problem greatly.
Members guitarist21 Posted June 11, 2007 Members Posted June 11, 2007 As most have said, change the strings. Old strings have a tendency to go out of tune. The tuners may be part of the problem, but I would change the strings first. If that doesn't help, then you can worry about tuners. Ellen
